MPTG-2: modular motor locomotive for every taste
For the first time, this railway equipment was presented to the general public in 2015 at the EXPO 1520 exhibition. Even then, almost nine years ago, the machine attracted the attention of specialists with its characteristics and versatility. At that time, many called MPTG-2 a “breakthrough” in the history of railway technology.


The main thing that distinguishes this locomotive from “its own kind” is its modular design. The car has an elongated carriage (18,5 m), which accommodates the crew and passengers. MPTG-2 is intended for:

✅ transportation of goods both on a standard and trailed platform
✅ assistance in carrying out repair work using our own crane installation
✅ delivery of on-duty track crews to the place of work
✅ clearing paths of snow
✅ shunting work at the station
✅ providing consumers with electricity (220 and 380 V) and compressed air at 8 atm.

The equipment is capable of pulling a trailer load weighing up to 300 tons at speeds up to 60 km/h (on a slope of 10% - 80 tons). If necessary, a wide variety of equipment can be installed on a motor vehicle: for example, drilling equipment (MPTG-2B), brush cutting equipment, and clamshell equipment.

The manufacturer of MPGT-2 is the Tikhoretsky Machine-Building Plant (the Ruselprom concern took part in the development of the project). In this case, the company has expanded its product line and offers equipment even for cities. We are talking about a snow removal tram. This unique “vacuum cleaner” is already working in our capital.

Technical features


The locomotive is driven by the Russian YaMZ-8502.10-28 diesel engine, which develops a power of 545 horsepower. Unlike the previous model, this one is characterized by greater efficiency, the use of asynchronous traction motors and the same generator. In total, this made it possible to extend the operational life of the power unit and increase the overall efficiency by 15%. The main gear also became electric - the previous model used a GP-300 “mechanics”. Other data:

✅ length, width, height - 18,5, 3,24 and 5,25 m
✅ average speed - 120 km / h
✅ minimum radius – 80 m
✅ dead weight (load capacity) – 75 t (5 t)

The locomotive can be equipped with a crane-manipulator, working with or without additional supports. In the first case, the mass of the transported load will be from 2900 to 5000 kg at the maximum and minimum boom reach, respectively. In the second - from 1200 kg to 3200 kg.

Upgrades


In 2018, the Tikhoretsky plant produced an improved version of the motor vehicle under the symbol MPTG-2P. The machine began to be equipped with an insulated mounting platform mounted on the frame (its load capacity is 500 kg). A pantograph has also been installed, making it possible to monitor the condition of the contact network. The MPTG-2P can accommodate not eight, as before, but fourteen people. The lifting capacity of the crane installation has also increased. Now with supports, the manipulator carries 6,7 tons of load at the smallest boom reach and 1,79 tons at the maximum.

The workers' compartment is equipped with comfort. There are soft chairs, air conditioning, a microwave, and connectors for charging various devices. And at the same time, the automatic diesel control system works: if there is no load, the engine speed decreases, otherwise it increases. According to the manufacturer, the MPTG-2 motor locomotive is superior in its operational capabilities and cost to “any foreign analogues.”

Today, the locomotive is operated throughout the Russian railway network – from Kaliningrad to the Far East. The car can be found in the former Soviet republics; Serbia and even Cuba have expressed interest in purchasing it. The payback period for a motor vehicle does not exceed 6,5 years. The price is not announced on the official website of the plant - only “on request”. Which obviously depends on the type of equipment being installed.
