The MPT-6 motor locomotive is a “hard worker” with many modifications
This is a next-generation model, which is designed to gradually displace its predecessor – MPT-4 (the abbreviation stands for “motor loading and transport locomotive”). The main difference from it is the location of the power plant - the diesel engine. It is now located under the frame, which frees up additional space on the platform.


Self-propelled two-axle railway equipment is produced by a machine-building plant in Tikhoretsk. The company has been producing railcars, motor locomotives, and railcars for repair and maintenance of railway tracks for over 100 years. Therefore, considerable experience has been accumulated here. The plant has a fairly extensive range: the catalog of products offered even includes tram cars. And of course, there are many types of repair vehicles, including motor vehicles of various types.

Functions of MPT-6


They are quite extensive, and the main one is the transportation of workers of up to ten people, and cargo both on its own platform and on a trailed one. The latter include rails up to 25 m long and sleepers, tools, and various repair equipment. For loading/unloading there is a separate cantilever crane installation.

Its load capacity greatly depends on the boom reach and the use of additional supports. If they are missing, the mechanism will move from 0,9 to 5 tons. When they are installed, the mass of the lifted load increases to 2 tons at the maximum and 6,3 tons at the minimum reach. If necessary, you can use a thirty-meter winch, the force of which on the hook reaches 600 kg.

The locomotive is equipped with a stationary generator, allowing welding work to be carried out in the field. Any power tool or other consumer powered by a voltage of 6 or 220 volts can be connected to the MPT-380. The compressor on board provides pressure up to 8 atmospheres.

In addition, the MPT-6 is equipped with TMZ brand snow removal equipment: a ram-type plow. The locomotive can also perform shunting work at the station and be used as the lead vehicle of the train, which maintains the railway tracks in proper order.

Driving performance


The MPT-6 is driven by a YaMZ-238 B-33 or YaMZ-7511 diesel unit, developing 240 or 400 “horses,” respectively. From it, the torque through the GP-300 (GMPM-220) hydraulic transmission goes to the generator (three phases, 220 kW), and the cardan shafts of the axial gearboxes. The compressor operates via a drive belt.

On its platform, the motor vehicle is capable of transporting up to 8 tons, while the weight of the trailer load (when maneuvering) reaches 400 tons. The weight of the MPT-4 itself is 32 tons. Depending on the version, the speed reaches 110 km/h. The length, width and height of the machine are 13,17, 3,32 and 5,28 m. Wheelbase is 7 m.

Modifications


To make shunting work more convenient, the Tikhoretsky plant produces a two-cabin version of the locomotive under the designation MPT-6.2.

This model, in addition to the ability to move back and forth without changing lanes, is equipped with an autonomous workshop car with machines and tools. There are other modifications:

✅ with a telescopic crane – index “6.3”
✅ increased passenger compartment for 22 people – “6.3”
✅ traction electric motors – “6E”
✅ electromechanical main gear – “6.5”

The MPT-6 is a truly universal technique that can be found in almost any former Soviet republic. The Tikhoretsky plant today, according to information on the official website, continues to produce any modifications of the MPT-6 and its predecessor MPT-4.
