Soviet passenger cars have never been distinguished by outstanding technical and design solutions. This is understandable - in a planned economy, it could not be otherwise. In the absence of competition, it made no sense to improve cars. But the Soviet SUVs surprised. Even the Niva, created from scratch for the civilian market, became the progenitor of a whole family - now popular crossovers. And it’s not even worth talking about models made on the chassis of military vehicles.
But against the backdrop of UAZs, the small SUVs of the Lutsk plant are somehow forgotten. They are remembered mainly by rural residents, hunters and forestry workers. And also lovers of off-road adventures, because LuAZ, even with a “native” engine from Zaporozhets, will pass where any “jeep” in the factory version gets stuck. And these are not legends at all, but the truth, repeatedly verified. Of course, a simple air-cooled gasoline engine is an anachronism. But no one forbids equipping LuAZ with a diesel engine. And it will be cheap. As the practice and experience of do-it-yourselfers shows, under the hood of a Soviet SUV, a second-generation Volkswagen Golf diesel engine is perfectly placed. And what LuAZ is capable of can be seen in the video of the Gorbunoff channel.
