Oruga Unitrack - single-track, high-pass electric bike
The world of three-wheelers can become even more interesting and exciting with the arrival on the market of a new off-road mobility solution from Latvian startup Oruga SIA. The company recently presented its original new product - a unique electric single-track all-terrain motorcycle Unitrack. The presentation took place as part of the TechChill 2024 event, which took place in Riga, Latvia.

Oruga SIA is a young player in the SUV market, specializing in the production of patented tracked mobility systems. The company was founded in the summer of 2023, and its name, derived from the Spanish word for "caterpillar", is intended to highlight the ability of the new transport solution to easily overcome even the most difficult sections of rough terrain.

The three-wheeled Oruga Unitrack is described as "the world's first all-terrain, all-terrain, all-terrain, all-terrain vehicle." The main distinguishing feature of this motorbike is its design. It involves the presence of three wheels shod with durable balloon tires, which are additionally “packed” into a single-track track system.

The technology is patented and allows for more efficient weight distribution over a larger surface area. Moreover, if two wheels are usually a support, then the third is located almost at the level of the headlight. An additional motorcycle wheel can be useful when overcoming steep climbs, sandy embankments and snowy roads.

In addition, the model reportedly received a powerful electric motor and a large battery. True, the manufacturer has not yet disclosed their technical parameters, but claims that they will help off-road enthusiasts get to any place, regardless of the time of year and weather conditions.

The Oruga Unitrack is also known to have coil spring suspension at both ends and a curved track surface that allows it to lean into corners. However, it is still unclear how exactly the driver will control this “beast” on turns, because the usual steering does not seem to be provided in this model.

The designers explain that the track flexes at the contact point of the lower front wheel when turning the handlebars, but this gives the motorcycle a huge turning radius - almost 20 feet (about 6 meters). As the manufacturer clarifies, this figure can be reduced. To do this, it is necessary that the driver also leans over and shifts his weight in the desired direction. But it seems that even with such a maneuver it is hardly possible in practice to ensure the most efficient turn, especially in off-road conditions. In any case, it will be possible to see and evaluate this only after the first functional sample is ready.

And it looks like this will become possible quite soon. Despite the fact that the Oruga Unitrack is certainly an unconventional motorcycle, it, unlike other similar developments, is being assembled into a series. The first batch of 100 units of equipment will be available in mid-2025. The company is already accepting pre-orders, but has not yet disclosed any details about the final price or technical characteristics of the new product.
