Hydrogen Hyundai Nexo licensed to sell in China

Today, it became known from official sources that the hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo crossover will soon be sold in China. This is the first passenger car of its type that is allowed to operate on public roads without any restrictions.

The Chinese authorities have been supporting the development of hydrogen transport for the past 5 years. This is one of the priorities of China's energy system as a whole. The issuance of a license confirms the chosen course and proves that modern cars have a sufficient level of safety for normal operation.



According to the program adopted by the Chinese government, by 2035 the share of such transport should be at least 20%. The authorities also plan to launch the production of their own hydrogen machines in the next 5 years. Today, work is underway to create not only reliable, but also inexpensive units to make them available to a wide range of customers.

It is worth noting that this is not the first car on this type of fuel from a Korean manufacturer. The auto giant has already sold the Tucson Fuel Cell crossover in Europe and the US, but it was not in great demand due to the high price.



The new model uses a platform specially designed for hydrogen transport, which has nothing to do with standard options. This made it possible to significantly increase the size of the cabin, while reducing the total weight of the car. Through the use of competent technical solutions, it was possible to increase the return on the power unit and improve its energy efficiency.



An electric motor with a capacity of 163 liters is used as a drive. with., issuing almost 400 N * m of torque. In a special tank under a pressure of 35 MPa, up to 4 kg of hydrogen in liquid form can fit. The system also has a 40 kWh battery. The power reserve at full refueling and charging reaches almost 600 km.



According to the Korean auto giant, mass production will begin in the second half of 2022. The price has not yet been announced, but it is unlikely to be a budget car. As for deliveries to other countries, work is underway on licensing in a number of states where hydrogen transport is not yet allowed to operate. Hyundai plans to take a leading position in a niche that is still free.
