The Likhachev Plant, also known as ZiL and ZiS, is a legendary enterprise. It existed even after the collapse of the USSR, but rather degraded. However, all former Soviet factories were in a similar situation, regardless of which country. Some were lucky to stay afloat and be revived. The clearest example is GAZ. But, firstly, there were Volgas, which many rushed to buy in the early 90s. As soon as it became clear that foreign cars were better, and even more affordable in used form, GAZ passenger cars ceased to be in demand. And then the Gazelle appears.
And the Likhachev plant at that time was chronically unlucky. Initially they did not have cars. Don’t count ZIL limousines, which are piece goods, among them. The company eventually went bankrupt. Plus, land in Moscow turned out to be needed for commercial developers. But ZIL used to shine. He had a huge design bureau, where passionate specialists worked.
