450-ton BelAZ-75710 is the world leader in carrying capacity
The history of the BelAZ plant began in 1958, when the production of a large-tonnage dump truck was transferred from neighboring Minsk to suburban Zhodino. A couple of years later, they also mastered the production of a 40-ton MAZ-530. These events have clearly defined the category of the Zhodino plant as a manufacturer of exceptional heavyweights.


The following models were already local designs with even greater payloads. It is clear that such a huge technique has no place on the roadway. Therefore, today we will talk about mining dump trucks. And they have been produced at this enterprise for more than 60 years of history. But one heavyweight is worth mentioning separately. This is BelAZ-75710, which has an amazing load capacity.

The economic crisis that gave birth to a heavyweight


The world economy at the end of the "zero" gave a serious roll. The created crisis was felt by all industries of the leading countries of the world. One of the problems that arose was a sharp decline in the profitability of open-pit mining.

As a way to solve it, the idea of ​​​​creating a super-dump truck with a huge payload was put forward. It seemed that this would significantly reduce the number of trips. This means that the profitability of mining should, in turn, grow. To achieve the desired, it was necessary to take into account several criteria at once:

✅ choose the most optimal project
✅ find the maximum tire size
✅ develop a control system for the future monster

In the last question, the choice was between an articulated version or the use of swing axles. As a result, the engineers came to the conclusion that the car, which had to carry hundreds of tons of cargo, would be better suited for the latter. With such parameters, a huge hinge would be required. In addition, it was non-repairable.

The development of the truck lasted several years, but by the beginning of autumn 2013, its first copy was ready. The Russian holding "Siberian Business Union" acted as the customer of the new equipment. In the winter of the following year, this dump truck went to the Kemerovo region, to the Chernigovets coal mine. It is in use there to this day.


However, at the beginning of 2014, another significant event happened with the super-dump truck. During a special test trip with the presence of representatives of the Guinness Book of Records, a European and CIS record was set. BelAZ-75710, passing through the range, carried a cargo weighing 503,5 tons in the back. This exceeded its estimated carrying capacity by fifty and a half tons.

Dump truck design features


BelAZ-75710 was designed to transport large loads in quarry conditions, in the presence of deep workings and difficult road conditions. This is facilitated by huge tubeless tires that can withstand a load of up to 105 tons each. Here are the main parameters of the giant:

✅ maximum load capacity - 450 tons
✅ operating temperature range - from - 50 to + 50
✅ fuel consumption - 1300 liters per 100 km
✅ maximum speed - 64 km / h
✅ total engine power - 4600 hp With.

✅ 2 diesel engines + electric generator
✅ maximum torque - 18,626 Nm

The car was equipped with eight wheels (half of them are gable) and a hybrid power plant. The latter fact allows you to significantly save fuel consumption when driving a huge car "empty". In this case, only one of the powerful diesel units is activated. This distribution of power will also be useful in an extreme situation. The involved engineers of the German company Siemens created the best transmission option. On the one hand, providing increased traction for both axles, on the other hand, it is ready to insure in case of technical difficulties.

If one of the electric motors suddenly breaks down, then the huge car will be able to get to the repair center on reserve. Agree, a very useful option! After all, for example, I can hardly imagine a tractor or a tugboat capable of transporting a broken huge colossus to a repair hangar.

What is the giant's power plant and chassis?


In order for a huge truck to move freely and carry cargo, a very powerful engine is needed. After all, BelAZ-75710 has only its own weight of 350 tons, and you also need to transport up to 450 tons of cargo on difficult road conditions. For this, two diesel V-16s were installed on the car. They feed the generator, to which 4 electric motors are connected.

Although, to be precise, one generator of suitable power could not be found, so two installations of this type had to be used at once. An inverter was installed that regulates the size of the voltage of the traction motors of the motor-wheel. This made it possible to achieve the best torque data at different speeds.

The already mentioned principle of driving without a load on one engine implies their alternate use. A similar approach is necessary for uniform wear of each of the power plants. Alternating current is generated by MMT500, manufactured by a well-known German company. Ergonomics is also applied in the case of electrical equipment. The engines are mounted in such a way that the wheels do not interfere with access to them. So there is no need to remove the huge wheel to service or repair the electric motor.

The engineers used an interesting solution in the exhaust system. If from one engine they go aside through a system of mufflers, then in another they combine the useful with the necessary. The exhaust is redirected to a special platform. This design allows you to slightly warm the ground during operation at extremely low temperatures. For the same purpose, pre-start heaters are used in engines.

The main frame and slewing devices are made of heavy-duty Weldox 800 steel, which allows the construction of the super dump truck to be stable and reliable. To ensure the smooth operation of the steering, pneumohydraulic accumulators were installed. They are a safety net for the main hydraulic equipment. In theory, it is assumed that the driver will have the opportunity in a dangerous situation to turn off the road and stop on the side of the road. Stabilizers solve two problems at once: rollover stability and smoothness of the dump truck.

Is there a future for the largest dump truck?


Of course, in modern conditions, the further production of promising trucks is in question. But more recently, interest was shown in him not only in Europe, but also overseas. True, several questions remained open, which were of great interest to American specialists. For example, how effective is the operation of the circular video review and the simultaneous operation of two diesel engines. After all, the last factor is very complex from a mechanical point of view, and its performance can only be assessed after prolonged operation.

Whatever it was, but two new giants worth just over 6 million dollars are almost ready for release. Will there be buyers for them and will this truck be able to get the title of the heaviest in the world? It is not easy to give an exact answer to these questions, but those who have already dealt with a huge car speak very positively about it:

The brakes are very effective, and the all-wheel drive design provides more comfortable driving on slippery and sticky roads, ”one of the factory test drivers said about BelAZ-75710.
