The Soviet Union was once famous for its truck cranes. This technique worked in all corners of the vast country. By the way, she is still relevant and continues to work on construction sites. True, it is already in the hands of small owners, as a rule.


Major players in the construction market have been using modern truck cranes for a long time. It is believed that most of them are foreign-made. In Russia, at the very least, only one Ivanovo machine-building plant, Autocrane, operates.

In fact, this is far from true. And in our country, truck cranes are produced at more than a dozen enterprises. But today we are interested in a specific model from the Galich Plant (GAKZ) - this is KS-84713-2 “Galichanin”.

What is it about this technique?


The main feature of the model is that it is a record holder. Yes, the truck crane is capable of lifting loads to a height of up to 81,7 meters. And this is a 100-ton truck. Nobody produces such models in Russia anymore.

The chassis was difficult to find. Initially, a Volvo FM 380 with a 10x4 wheel arrangement was chosen for this role. The foreign car met all the requirements, but turned out to be too expensive. Therefore, we began to look for something of this type on the side.

The only manufacturer that managed to provide the Galich Truck Crane Plant with the required chassis was the Minsk MZKT, with which many Russian enterprises cooperate. With the Belarusian car, the cost of new equipment was reduced by 12%. Let us remind you that as of 2021, the price for KS-84713-2 “Galichanin” on a Volvo FM 380 chassis was more than 45 million rubles.

By the way, MZKT-740001 was created specifically for GAKZ. That is, the manufacturer initially thought about reducing the cost of the 100-ton “Galichanin”.

As subsequent events showed, it was the right decision. After all, the economic sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation in 2022 put an end to the Volvo FM 380.

A little about the chassis


MZKT-740001 was created in 2016. This hints that the Galich Truck Crane Plant was thinking in advance about the production of heavy lifting equipment.

Chassis Features:

The MZKT-740001 is based on a powerful spar frame with cross members. The manufacturer checks each weld with x-rays, because the load on the chassis is assumed to be serious.

They also forgot about the powerful steel bumpers - no plastic. They have towing eyes. If necessary, the truck crane can be moved by some kind of loader or bulldozer. The bumpers and chassis will not be damaged, at most they will be scratched. You can avoid this by using old tires as a damper.

However, this is unlikely to be necessary. MZKT chassis are famous for their reliability. Moreover, the engine is Russian – diesel YaMZ-652. The motor complies with the Euro-4 environmental class.

Power unit power 412 hp. It doesn’t seem like much, but the torque is impressive – 1 Nm. The engine is paired with a nine-speed manual transmission. There is only one fuel tank – for 870 liters of diesel.

The chassis brakes are dual-circuit, pneumatic. The ABS system is standard. There is a special engine retarder brake, which is worth talking about in a little more detail.

This device is called a retarder and is used primarily on heavy equipment. The system has nothing to do with the main brakes and acts directly on the transmission.

The MZKT-740001 cabin is designed for three. The driver's seat is separate - the most comfortable, with air suspension. This allows you to move around construction sites and bad roads without harming your back.

The total weight of the chassis is more than 58 thousand kilograms. The length of MZKT-740001 is 11,1 meters. The weight of equipment that can be installed on the chassis is up to 44 thousand kg.

The turning radius of MZKT-740001 is 13 meters. For such dimensions this is not much. The first two and the last axis are steerable. The busbar is single-pitch. This is done to increase cross-country ability.

Interestingly, the suspension of the four axles is spring. But the fifth one has a pneumatic gun.

To lift loads up to 81,7 meters, the manufacturer had to try hard. For the manufacture of all metal structures, Swedish-made steel was initially used - from WELDOX and DOMEX.

There are currently problems with supplies from EU countries. Therefore, domestic steel is used for metal structures and booms. It is in no way inferior to the imported one, because the engineers of the Galich Truck Crane Plant specially ordered it from Russian manufacturers with a preliminary full analysis.

The boom consists of five sections, which are made of all-metal profiles. They are bent, not welded, which has a positive effect on the safety factor.

The length of the boom in the transport position is 13,6 meters. If it is completely expanded - 51 m. This allows:

✅ Work with different loads
✅ Move them over long distances
✅ Install them even in the most difficult to reach places, among tall metal structures

Such indicators were achieved thanks to the Transformer technology. The manufacturer assures that it is innovative and was invented by engineers of the design department of the Galich Truck Crane Plant.

The Transformer technology has already been repeatedly used on other cranes from GAKZ. The boom received two lattice sections, 6 m each. Two-section jib 18 meters.

It was the Transformer technology that ultimately helped make a unique truck crane. This model is worthy of the Russian Book of Records. After all, the maximum lifting height of a load is equal to an apartment building with 27 floors.

Features of the equipment


To operate the crane installation, a YaMZ-534 motor is used. This allows you not to worry about the engine stalling or the car later being unable to get to another construction site or base.

The crane operator's cabin has modern Bosch Rexroth joysticks. It is not entirely clear how the manufacturer manages to purchase them. Although, even if this is officially impossible, you can always turn to intermediaries.

The crane operator's cabin looks quite simple, but it meets all modern safety and comfort requirements. The all-round glazing, although not panoramic, provides the necessary visibility in all directions.

Inside the cabin is equipped with an autonomous heater. Air conditioning is also available upon request.

Lubrication of all elements and components of the crane installation is centralized. The BEKO-MAX system is responsible for it.

The cargo winch, even in the basic configuration, is equipped with a video camera. This helps to monitor the winding of the cable. If suddenly something goes wrong, the process can always be stopped, avoiding serious problems.

Main advantages


The main advantage of the KS-84713-2 “Galichanin” truck crane is its uniqueness. Such equipment is not assembled anywhere else in Russia. And there are no analogues in the CIS either.

The second plus is the extended warranty from the manufacturer. In addition, the GAKZ plant offers a special service support program. It is designed for 13 years, that is, for the entire service life of the truck crane.

The developers claim that domestic technology is in no way inferior to famous foreign “classmates”. Moreover, it is adapted specifically for Russian operation.

Judging by the reviews of crane operators who were lucky enough to work on this equipment, this is true. It seems that KS-84713-2 “Galichanin” is truly the pride of the Russian truck crane industry.
