Toyota will continue to develop diesel engines for cars

Toyota will continue to develop diesel engines for cars
Toyota management is confident that the fate of diesel engines is far from predetermined. These engines still have a great future ahead of them. The main thing is to improve them in accordance with new environmental standards.

Sean Hanley, head of the Australian division of Toyota, spoke about this. According to him, there is a lot of work on adapting diesel engines, but all investments will pay off. This is especially true for the cargo sector. Gasoline engines for tractors are unprofitable, and electric ones are not yet able to operate adequately without a wide network of charging stations and the corresponding infrastructure.

It is in Australia, where cargo has to be transported across vast desert areas, that there is no alternative to diesel engines. Moreover, this also applies to passenger cars, which include pickup trucks, which are popular in the country. By the way, they are considered light trucks there.

Toyota has already taken the first serious step in adapting diesel engines to new environmental standards. Their Hilux pickup is also available in a mild hybrid version. The car is equipped with a 2,8 liter diesel engine. The power unit received an electrical “add-on” in the form of a 48-volt starter-generator.

Toyota engineers claim that such a “mild” hybrid has at least several advantages. Firstly, it fits into new environmental standards. This is precisely why it was developed.

But there is a second serious advantage. Thanks to the starter-generator, fuel consumption was reduced by at least 10%, and even more in the city. After all, the electric “add-on” helps both during acceleration and during downtime in traffic jams.

The head of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, told reporters a couple of months ago that engineers are already working on a new generation of internal combustion engines. These include both gasoline and diesel power units.

The chairman of the board of the Japanese brand is confident that the average number of electric cars in the world will never exceed 30%. And there are many explanations for this. For example, the reserves of minerals from which common batteries are made are not unlimited. There are already problems with their extraction.

Secondly, not all drivers are ready to switch to electric cars. Some people don't have the means to do this. And many people simply like models with internal combustion engines.

Toyota management continues to work with synthetic and hydrogen fuels. In their opinion, they will be needed in the future, when oil reserves run out.
