AvtoVAZ told what will happen with the domestic turbocharged engine with 163 hp.

AvtoVAZ has finally commented on the fate of the domestic turbocharged engine. We are talking about a power unit developed based on the “heart” of the first generation Lada Kalina. The 1.4-liter engine develops 163 hp, but there are no plans to launch it into production yet.


The power unit has good potential, but its implementation on the assembly line in the current situation will simply be unprofitable. Firstly, funds are needed to launch full-scale production. Secondly, customers already complain that the prices for Lada cars are too high. A turbocharged engine increases the cost of cars by an order of magnitude.

At the same time, there are no plans to close the project yet. The engine, created on the basis of the VAZ-11194, is ready for production. But so far the situation on the new car market is not conducive to this.


By the way, the engine could have been launched 10 years ago. But the then owner, the Renault group, “frozen” it. The management of the enterprise considered that it would be more profitable for them to equip Lada cars with their own turbocharged engines. As time has shown, AvtoVAZ never received a production supercharged engine.

For now, the domestic manufacturer is working on import substitution of its existing models. By the way, marketers believe that it is more profitable to install Chinese turbocharged engines on Lada than to develop and launch domestic ones.
