Smart #5 Concept presented – small cars can also be SUVs

The joint venture between Geely and Mercedes-Benz showed a new product – the Smart concept model. It's called #5 Concept. They promise to launch this car into production almost in the same form as the prototype.


Unlike the usual Smart, the concept is not only larger - it is a new model. Not even a crossover, but a full-fledged SUV for traveling, at least externally. Of course, you shouldn’t expect the car to have a frame and differential locks, but the drive here will most likely be all-wheel drive.

If the concept turned out to be huge for the Smart brand, then compared to other crossovers it is compact. But thanks to the work of the designers, the model does not look like a toy at all, but rather brutal.


They promise to launch the production version of Smart #5 Concept in six months. In terms of dimensions, it will be no smaller than the Mercedes-Benz GLB. It’s not entirely clear why the Smart should be turned into a crossover, but perhaps customers will appreciate it.

The designers clearly expect to be a serious competitor to the Suzuki Jimny. It is already clear that in appearance they have surpassed the legendary Japanese model. And off-road potential is the next thing.

Moreover, Smart #5 Concept is not bad in this regard. The manufacturer did not provide technical specifications, but you can see how high the car’s ground clearance is. The bottom will obviously be flat - this is an electric car. And huge low-profile tires can paddle in the mud until the car sits on its “belly”.

At the front, Smart #5 Concept has a powerful “knuckle bar”. On top is a massive trunk, almost expeditionary. And there are also branch breakers, not made of steel cables, but of fiber optics.

While on the outside the car looks as brutal as possible, on the inside it is clearly made with Chinese drivers in mind. They love everything bright and catchy. Smart #5 Concept has everything in order with this.


Once you look into the salon, you immediately get the impression of a disco. There are many displays around, illumination, and a glass floor in the luggage compartment. It’s strange that the interior color is calm – a noble shade of brown.

From the technical characteristics of the Smart #5 Concept, we only know that it is created on an 800-volt architecture, and the drive will be all-wheel drive with two motors. They promise a powerful 100 kWh running battery.

The on-board computer will have a built-in artificial intelligence system. They promise that she will be able to answer any question. It turns out that the new Smart will fully live up to its name. After all, this word is translated as “smart.”

The live show of the concept car will take place on April 25.
