Clenet Series III Asha – 30s luxury in an 80s package
What is the reason for the good success of new models of the Indian Java or a number of cars from different manufacturers, in the style of the legendary Beetle? The answer is on the surface - in the desire of many to remember the “good old days” again and again.

This tradition is not new, because even the biblical sage mentioned a man who argues “why the old times were better than the present.” Yes, our whole history is fraught with going back in our thoughts and sadness about lost opportunities.

And if all this is so relevant and on an ongoing basis, then it’s a sin not to take advantage of it? Yes, that's exactly what some manufacturers think. A new design style has long been formed for them, called retro design.

California spectacular retro models

And nostalgic memories are relevant not only for the post-Soviet space. This is also the case with representatives of other countries, even well-fed America. Almost half a century ago, an unusual project arose in the state of California. Its creators precisely hoped to touch the nostalgic notes of wealthy clients.

The American company Clenet, which emerged in 1976, specialized exclusively in so-called cars. neoclassical style. One of the most famous is the Series III Asha hardtop, which appeared five years later.

It all started in Santa Barbara, where an outrageous car was created, built in a very limited series. Its flashy design earned it the nickname Rolls Royce of California. The hype around it led to many American celebrities wanting to own such a car. Among them were not only Hollywood movie stars, but also some famous public figures.

But the number of such lucky ones was limited to only a few dozen. The rest could only wait and dream that someone would get bored with the expensive toy and the opportunity would arise to repurchase the Series III Asha. True, at a higher price.

The production of the exclusive model lasted a little over a year, ending completely in 1982. True, such a short period of time did not prevent the manufacturer from offering a figurative modification of its product to those interested. After the first 38 examples were born, the creators of the retro model resorted to some modifications to the basic design, further increasing general interest in the car. The changes included several points regarding the power drive:

✅ modern 5-liter V8 EFI engine
✅ availability of fuel injection
✅ automatic gearbox

The last 14 released copies received even greater interest among connoisseurs of unusual equipment. Collectors began a literal hunt for them; rates grew very quickly, maintaining the created excitement for a long time.

The crazy popularity of the retro car

All lovers of retro style dreamed of owning a very rare piece of equipment, which is the fruit of hand assembly. In addition, the overall picture was effectively complemented by a removable roof of the original design. In principle, even today, more than four decades later, there are many who want to add just such a stylish copy of the Series III Asha car to their collection.

The hardtop Series III Asha was considered a sub-model of the base version. It acted as a grand tourer with excellent bodywork. This option had several features, which will be listed below:

✅ coupe body
✅ hard roof
✅ high-quality patina

In general, the model in question is only a small part of the 12-year history of the American company Clenet Coachworks Inc., specializing exclusively in the assembly of luxury equipment. It has always been exclusive, handmade and in a very limited edition.

The calculation was usually made for the wealthy American elite. Sometimes this number included selected clients from abroad. In addition to Hollywood stars, famous diplomats and businessmen were listed. In general, interest was fueled, leading moneybags to the conclusion that owning one of the Clenet models is an excellent confirmation of the status of the owner.

By the way, the prefix in the name of the model appeared thanks to the three-year-old daughter of the company’s founder, Alena Klena. It was he and several other investors who initiated the creation of the Clenet Corporation in 1975. Now let's focus a little on the capabilities of the Series III Asha.

Technical indicators and release completion

The relatively compact car in neoclassical style had a four-seater design. In general, it received several advantageous differences from its predecessors. This number included a proprietary passenger compartment and a roof with angular lines. The exhaust pipes are now also more recessed into the structure. Here are its other features:

✅ Ford drive technology
✅ 8-cylinder engine
✅ working volume - 4,9 l
✅ power - 136 liters. With
✅ curb weight - 1633 kg

The luxury design also included the richest interior filling, including Italian walnut and British carpets. The picture was complemented by Connolly leather and a natural crystal ashtray. Excellent performance allowed the car to easily accelerate to 145 km/h. Its price at the beginning of production was 62,5 thousand dollars. After the creation of an improved modification, it increased to 1987 thousand by 82,5.

But the production of exclusive cars also required huge investments. Due to the lack of mass production and sales, the company soon faced serious financial difficulties. All this led to the fact that already in the early 80s the assembly of retro equipment had to be suspended. It all ended with the complete bankruptcy of Clenet Coachworks Inc.

Among its first employees was businessman Alfred J. DiMora. It was he who decided to somehow revive the brand. So, already in 1982, the enthusiast announced the creation of the Classic Clenet Club. At first, it was positioned as an opportunity to support owners of exclusive cars in technical terms. In addition to consultations, they were offered assistance with maintenance and spare parts. To maintain corporate spirit, special social events were even held.
