Hyundai presented a new electric racing car – Ioniq 5 N eN1
Trends towards sustainability and renewable energy sources are gaining more and more popularity. And the automotive industry is not left behind. In recent years, the market has seen a boom in electric vehicles. Both regular and racing versions are created. Korean auto giant Hyundai recently pleased us with a new sports electric car.

The company has been developing sports cars for several years now. To keep up with the times, the emphasis is on electric cars. Until 2023, the Koreans released several significant prototypes, and last year an updated model was presented - Ioniq 5 N. Since 2022, over 30 thousand of these electric cars have been sold worldwide. But progress does not stand still, and Hyundai engineers recently presented an updated sports model - Ioniq 5 N eN1. The show took place in the Philippines in early April.

This car is intended exclusively for racing tracks. The model was created for the N1-class. Only production cars can compete in this category. Previously, the updated Hyundai Elantra was presented for the same class.

Modifications of Ioniq 5 N eN1

According to the developers, the car has been significantly redesigned. It has become 20 mm lower, as well as 50 mm wider and 80 mm longer. This allows you to install adaptive shock absorbers and wheels up to 18 inches. It is expected to use Pirelli PZero tires, which are made to order.

Aerodynamics have also been significantly changed. The front bumper and radiator grille received additional ventilation openings, air curtains and active flaps. This helps improve cooling and aerodynamic efficiency. In addition, the Hyundai team developed an exclusive rear spoiler and diffuser for better airflow control.

The arches have also changed, they have become wider. The new version features a more pronounced front lip and rear wing than the previous model. The hood of the electric car is made of fiberglass, and the windows are made of polycarbonate, which significantly reduces the weight of the car. Interestingly, the developers left the systems of the previous model - N Grin Boost, N e-Shift and N Active Sound.

For example, N Grin Boost – a mode of short-term increase in power up to 641 hp. s., but the system can only work for 10 seconds. N e-Shift is a transmission program that simulates the shift behavior of a manual transmission. The creators ensured the feel of power delivery, carefully simulated gear shifts by fine-tuning the engine's torque output at various levels, resulting in unprecedented precision and controllability. That is, on a new electric car the driver will feel the gear shift.

The N Active Sound system allows you to simulate the sounds of different engines of the N series - 2.0T and RN22e. There is a “Susonic” mode, which completely replicates the sound of a fighter. The purpose of the N Active Sound system is to provide a sense of the power drivers are using in the car.

The developers of the new model also thought about additional safety. A welded multi-point frame, bucket seat and reinforced harnesses should protect the rider in the event of a crash. There is also a high voltage cut-off device and a power unit fault warning indicator. At the rear there is a triangular brake light and reflector. The location of the charging port of the electric car has been changed.

What's in the salon?

The interior of the electric car is also different from the prototypes and has a completely racing look. On the steering wheel, in addition to the branded buttons, a prominent “N” logo appeared for the first time. The center console is specifically designed for track driving.

The seats have been lowered and equipped with reinforced bolsters to provide better cornering stability and lateral support. And the finishing touches are USB-C ports, wireless charging and cup holders.

Technical specifications

The Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car is based on the Hyundai E-GMP platform and is equipped with an 84 kWh battery. It can travel 448 kilometers without recharging. The battery sends power to the front engine with 222 horsepower. With. and rear at 378 hp. s., which gives a total of 641 liters. With. The racing car can charge from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes. The high-voltage battery has a warranty of 8 years or 160 kilometers.

Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 3,4 seconds, and the top speed is 260 km/h. This is the highest figure among all Hyundai production models. The total weight is 1970 kg, which is 250 kg lighter than its road counterpart.

Despite the fact that the powertrain remains the same, Hyundai has equipped the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car with special two-way adjustable shock absorbers that allow you to change the camber and ride height. The electric car received six-piston front and four-piston forged calipers.

The new Ioniq 5 N will be available in five color options: Atlas White, Abyss Black Pearl, Cyber Gray Metallic, Performance Blue and Performance Blue Matte. The car is covered by a warranty of 5 years or 200 thousand kilometers.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Russia

The Ioniq 5 Long Range and Standard Range configurations are actively sold in Russia. Prices for electric cars with minimal mileage start at 4,5 million rubles. There is no information yet about the supply of the updated version. And electric car racing in Russia is still in its infancy. So there won't be much demand for the eN1 Cup Car.

Eco racing

Motorsport is where every model is tested against fierce competition. The new Ioniq electric car will compete in the eN1 special racing class at the upcoming Hyundai N Festival season in South Korea. The company called its development the next stage in the development of electric motor sports.

The season will be a test season for Korean electric vehicles of this class. The eN1 is expected to be tested and upgraded in an increasingly competitive track environment. This period will also allow racing teams and drivers to become more familiar with the specifics of this competition format. In addition, charging infrastructure, firefighting and emergency response measures will be finalized during this test season.

The first round of the Hyundai N Festival will begin on April 27 at the Inje Speedium in Seoul. The format involves different types of competitions, namely knockout races, sprints, and one-on-one competitions. The different runs will allow teams and drivers to learn strategy for racing these electric vehicles.

One can argue for a long time about the environmental friendliness of electric cars. Yes, they do not leave a carbon footprint during use, but the unclear prospects for recycling batteries and their manufacturing process undermine the whole concept of caring for the environment.

Electric cars are already present in all types of racing - Formula E, MotoE, Extreme E, Dakar, ETCR - eTouring Car World Cup and others.

Apparently, the trend will only intensify. And we will hear more than once about new electric racing cars. Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car is a project that should increase interest in the eN1 class. It remains to wish good luck to the Korean developers and designers, and we will follow the development of electric racing cars.
