Mercedes' electric flagship and king of comfort – EQS SUV

Mercedes' electric flagship and king of comfort – EQS SUV
Mercedes' electric offensive is focused not only on sleek sedans, but also on curvy SUVs, of which the EQS is its flagship. Today we have the opportunity to learn a little more about one new product that appeared a couple of years ago.

There was a time when gentlemen went to private clubs to calm their frayed nerves. Relaxing in a leather armchair and the quiet surroundings of a tastefully equipped establishment (accompanied by a good book or the latest newspaper), with a glass of brandy to boot, acted like a balm for the soul.

Some modern aesthetes have compared being behind the wheel of an ESQ SUV to this peaceful process. And for good reason, because its interior is a soothing oasis of silence and comfort, which floats completely calmly and smoothly along the road with a slight pleasant sway.

And its owner simply lies down in a comfortable leather chair with ventilation or heating (depending on the time of year). In addition, he receives a wide massage set and a soft pillow in the headrest. All this beckons us to close our eyes and relax, but let’s be careful. Falling asleep behind the wheel of an electric car while driving is a very dangerous idea.

An electric SUV with all sorts of bells and whistles

Thus, the EQS model confirms that the company continues the wave of unprecedented comfortable luxury in the era of electric vehicles. In fact, the electric drive emphasizes this character even more - after all, such quiet operation cannot be achieved even with the most damped internal combustion engine. And a super-soft automatic transmission will not provide similar smoothness.

The manufacturer presented the Mercedes EQS SUV on April 19, 2022. The car was offered in three versions with electric motors varying in torque and power characteristics.

It is interesting that, unlike some other manufacturers, the German company did not “sweeten the pill”, trying to lure ICE fans into the “electric grid”. While others tried to attract customers with shocking design or unimaginable characteristics of their electric versions, Mercedes acted rather pragmatically.

While maintaining the familiar environment, the company allowed the client to make an informed choice by introducing the so-called. unobtrusive electrification of the drive system. Therefore, from the point of view of comfort, the interior of the EQS SUV is truly at its best. In addition to the breathtaking silence on board, which the Stuttgart engineers managed to tune very well, the seats are upholstered in fine leather. Pleasant to the touch, but at the same time, not too soft.

Those who have not yet seen the model in person (but only in photos) may think that it looks like a medium-sized car, but this is far from the truth. In order not to be unfounded, let's together pay attention to some of the physical parameters of the technology:

✅ length - 5,12 m
✅ width - 1,96 m
✅ height - 1,72 m
✅ wheelbase - 3210 mm

The 450 4Matic version has become one of the most popular among customers. Simply, it has the optimal balance between price and technical characteristics. As they say, better than the “younger sister”, but noticeably cheaper than the “elder”. Here are some of its indicators:

✅ capacity - 5 people
✅ luggage compartment volume – b. 600 l
✅ curb weight – b. 2,5 t
✅ maximum torque – 800 N*m

And external grandeur is not the most important determining factor of a car. Its luxury is further revealed when the retractable handle opens the gigantic and heavy door, inviting you into the world of the Mercedes EQS. The luxury interior is perfectly confirmed by the presence of a multi-screen – stunning displays across the entire dashboard, called MBUX Hyperscreen. Their price tag is no less stunning - they are available for an additional cost of 9,2 thousand dollars. And although at first glance everything looks like one huge screen, there are three of them:

✅ first – classic dashboard
✅ the second is a giant central display for controlling all vehicle functions
✅ the third is in front of the passenger

Perhaps it is worth mentioning in more detail. Largely separated from the rest of the car's functionality, this element can allow the passenger to become a true co-pilot. In addition to the fact that you can log in with your own user profile (which is different from the main one on the large display), there are other options. For example, turning on the massage function for the two front seats, which the driver does not need to figure out, but simply ask a neighbor.

In addition, there is a separate navigation interface where the occupant of the right front seat can find a destination, and the driver will send it to the large screen, receiving detailed information about the upcoming route. Last but not least, the owner can use the system to play their own music or watch videos using headphones.

Other technical features of the car

Interestingly, there is a function to simultaneously turn on heating and ventilation. This creates a kind of microclimate where your back is warm, but without excess sweat. But most massage programs involve sitting closely, which may not be to everyone's taste. Different versions may differ in power and range (in parentheses - EQS 580 figures):

✅ power - 360 (544) l. With
✅ lithium-ion battery – 107,8 kWh
✅ range – 660 km

The back row is further away, and the comfort there is not much less, although, of course, there are no side rails. The car has four-zone air conditioning, the rear seats are heated and electrically adjustable. And, thanks to the already mentioned wheelbase, there is more than enough space everywhere.

But even in such an ideal design you can always find at least something for a little criticism. And it concerns the interior of the EQS SUV. First, the leather on the door panels and armrests isn't very nice, especially compared to the superbly upholstered seats. Also, due to the shape of the central tunnel, it is difficult to find a comfortable position where to remove your foot from the pedals when driving with active adaptive cruise control.

Another complaint is the relatively poor visibility from the cabin, due to the incredibly thick A-pillars. Of course, in this way the company has ensured the best passive safety of the car, but, especially if you are not used to it, you will have to constantly use the camera system around the car. True, it is magnificent, also offering an “off-road” view of the area directly in front of the vehicle.

Fake sound and price issue

Another highlight can be considered the three options for fake sound in the EQS cabin while driving. However, they do not attempt to imitate an internal combustion engine, and produce fairly quiet signals most of the time. They can only be clearly heard during sudden acceleration or braking. One even somewhat resembles “Mutagen,” the fictional car from “Extreme Driving” in the original computer game Mafia.

Interestingly, when in operating mode, the electric car emits quiet signals even when there is no person inside. This can lead to a funny situation. You will search for the source of the sound vibrations until you realize that they are coming from inside the EQS, with no one in the cabin.

The luxury content of the car has already attracted buyers with thick wallets. And the manufacturer even offered a year ago the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 - an ultra-luxurious version of the EQS SUV. By the way, prices for the basic version of the car range from 73 to 162 thousand dollars, depending on the configuration.
