Lada Vesta: does it need a Chinese CVT - what car owners say about this
An official representative of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant revealed the features of the Chinese variator, which is now installed on the Lada Vesta. Potential buyers have questions related to the service life of the unit from China, its reliability, and performance in difficult Russian climatic conditions.

The head of the Lada Vesta project, Oleg Grunenkov, claims that the Chinese WLY CVT18 variator will serve trouble-free up to 150 thousand km at least. Moreover, the warranty for this product is three years of operation or 100 thousand kilometers. According to Grunenkov, cars equipped with this CVT were tested in the Sochi Mountains.

At the same time, the Lada Vesta was dragging a trailer weighing 900 kg. After overcoming 150 thousand km there were no complaints about the variator and therefore further tests were simply stopped. What do Russian car owners think about the Chinese WLY CVT18 on Lada Vesta? The answers are quite original:

It’s strange how the tests were carried out: Sochi is not all of Russia. But what about Siberia with its frosts, the Far East, or just a broken primer and “dead” asphalt? There are also many such roads in the Russian Federation: although they are rare, you will also have to travel on them

– Mikhail N. from Novosibirsk is perplexed

The issue of repairing the variator is of interest. Where and how will it be carried out after the end of the warranty period? Is anything being done in this direction or can the box be thrown away after 150 thousand km?

– Ivan Maksimovich from Skopin worries

As far as we know, this CVT has been produced in China since 2018 by WanLiYang. And, in essence, this is a complete analogue of the well-known Japanese Jatco. WLY CVT18 CVTs are installed on Chinese cars from the manufacturer Chery and its sub-brands. I don’t think there will be any problems with this unit: it has proven itself quite well for at least five and a half years. And if you add the story of “Jatko” here, then there’s nothing to talk about

– Leonid G. from Moscow argues logically

The box is far from ideal, and everyone in the know is well aware of its main problem: overheating. Moreover, this is typical for both Jatco and WLY CVT18, which are installed on cars from Chery. However, most often this happens on cars with relatively powerful, at least two-liter engines. In our case, the Chinese CVT will be installed on the Lada Vesta. And, if her engine has a volume of 1,8 liters, then I think the problem will not be so pronounced
