Supersport Praga Bohema, weighing less than one ton

Supersport Praga Bohema, weighing less than one ton
The Praga company officially began production of its supersport Bohema in 2024, which looks like a racing car. What will the selected 89 clients get for their 34 million crowns (approx. $1,5 million)? The development of the new product is based on the experience gained during the competition. Also used are design elements of the previous Praga R1 rocket, a special carbon car with complex aerodynamics, equipped with an engine from the Clio RS.

Of course, today's European motorsport fans associate the Praga brand with karting and the R1R racing car, which is rarely seen on Czech tracks. However, the latter has its own series, for example in the UK and the US. Also, history buffs may remember that the Praga brand has been with us for more than 115 years.

However, now his name is mentioned in all automotive news in the world. Praga Bohema is a Czech supersport that intends to compete only with the best. Praga Cars UK CEO Mark Harrison called it a crazy idea that has every chance of being successfully implemented.

The appearance of the long-awaited car

The R1R has received its own series and is popular among drivers for its incredible capabilities, solid reliability and reasonable running costs. In parallel with its production, work was carried out on a new supersport for circuit racing. After all, it has very little in common with the R1R: the race car is too cramped for two crew members, and its design has many limitations.

Thus, Praga Bohema was created almost from scratch. It took seven long years for all the development, but finally it went into production.

It is interesting that there has been talk about the mandatory creation of a road version of the racing car from the very beginning of its appearance. Hot heads convinced everyone that the new product should have a price equivalent to the Porsche 911 GT2 and perfect characteristics. You can judge for yourself what we have in practice:

✅ 6-cylinder engine
✅ double turbocharging from the legendary Nissan GT-R R35
✅ carbon body
✅ total weight of the structure – 982 kg

Even before the power unit appeared under the hood of the car, it received significant intervention from the British specialists Litchfield Motors. They installed a new turbo, dry sump lubrication and carefully adjusted its operation. This made the engine more resistant to overloads and, of course, the engine is ready for noticeable lateral rolls. Here are the immediate characteristics of the installed Nissan GT-R:

✅ working volume - 3,8 l
✅ power – 710 l. s at 6800 rpm
✅ maximum torque – 725 N*m

Not without interest, in addition to the described engine from the Nissan GT-R, the naturally aspirated ten-cylinder Audi R8 with a volume of 5,2 liters was also mentioned as an option. This, undoubtedly, could have been a very interesting decision, but two negative factors intervened at once.

In addition to not allowing further easy customization, Audi also failed to guarantee regular deliveries and follow-up support.

Technical Features and Benefits

At the same time, Praga Bohema still remains a very small car. Its width and length are similar to, for example, the small Ferrari 296 GTB. In the cramped cockpit, the passenger seat is positioned slightly behind the driver to avoid being in the way of his neighbor's shoulders.

However, it is quite comfortable, beautifully made, and the upholstery makes you want to touch it. Bohema even allocated 100 liters of space for small luggage. It can be found on the sides, just like in the Pagani Huyara.

By the way, the car only has rear-wheel drive and a Hewland robotic sequential transmission. And representatives of mechanical service, represented by Mr. Litchfield, claim that it is possible to configure the equipment so that it produces up to 1000 “horses”. This attracts many clients and fuels general interest in the model.

All the excellent indicators and flattering assessments listed above are not just “a rabbit pulled out of a sleeve.” We are not talking about data obtained by one of the simulators. After all, Praga tested its Bohema on the most difficult sections and routes:

✅ Red Bull Ring
✅ Spa-Francorchamps
✅ legendary Nürburgring

At the wheel of the test sample, factory test driver Josef Kral alternated with former Formula 1 star Romain Grosjean and Ben Collins. Of course, we're dealing with experts who know a thing or two about actually driving fast, and their names are familiar to those interested in motorsports.

The car, of course, received several driving modes and Launch Control, that is, starting from a standstill, using electronic control for the best acceleration. The automaker claims that the Bohema will be able to reach the first “hundred” in less than 3,5 seconds. And the highest speedometer limit can easily reach 300 km/h. But driving fast was not the main goal of the model. No, the main emphasis is on comfortable and confident cornering, which best demonstrates the original purpose of the sports car.

As mentioned, the Bohema has a carbon fiber body and chassis. The engine is located in a subframe to ensure vibration and driving comfort. And although a detailed examination of all the solutions gives a feeling of carefully designed aerodynamics, the car lacks any active elements in this direction. The design does not have a special brake or a folding wing.

Electric motors or hydraulic controls on such designs usually have a negative impact on weight. Therefore, the creators did a good job of keeping it within one ton. After all, the key is car control and downforce. And the Bohema produces more than 900 kg of this figure at a speed of 240 km/h.

First impressions and further development of the project

A select few journalists have already taken the Bohema for a test ride. And everyone agrees that the car is very easy to drive, and the engine, like a regular GT-R, pulls from idle and builds up brutal power.

They also noted a difficult landing, where you simply cannot do without a little gymnastics. But testers confirm that the car is surprisingly well soundproofed and superbly finished. And, despite the sporty design style, it offers a fairly decent view. The only design flaw is the gearbox setup. But this problem has already been worked on and, it seems, not without success.

Praga Cars UK CEO Mark Harrison, in an interview with the British Autocar, called Praga Bohema a profitable project. But he also admitted that one of his main goals is to drum up interest in the company's racing versions.

Praga is headquartered in the UK, but the car was developed largely in Slovakia. Here he also covered his first kilometers. But the final assembly takes place in the Czech Republic, at the workshops of Roman Krest. The manufacturer strives to ensure excellent quality of components, so the annual circulation will not exceed two dozen copies. The warranty is two years, plus unlimited mileage.
