Unmanned trams will appear in Moscow this year

Unmanned trams will appear in Moscow this year
Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport, Mr. Liksutov, during his lecture for schoolchildren in the capital, revealed details about the project to introduce unmanned trams into the sphere of urban passenger transportation.

He said that the first representatives of such transport will appear in certain areas in the second half of the year. Currently, unmanned vehicles are undergoing training to drive independently in depot conditions.

At this stage, there is a driver inside the tram who controls all processes, but in the future the movement will be completely autonomous.

According to Liksutov, the technology distinguishes well between pedestrians and cars, including those moving in violation of traffic rules. Also, unmanned urban transport determines the current and subsequent traffic light signals in advance. In addition, even an animal that decides to cross the tram tracks will not go unnoticed.

The government representative also said that in 2030, the capital’s metro is planned to be switched to an unmanned control mode. Work in this direction is already underway.
