The popularity of manual transmissions is growing rapidly: what do our car owners say?
It wasn't that long ago that a manual transmission was the "standard" choice, seen as the quintessential driving experience. However, over the past two decades, its popularity among new and experienced drivers has decreased markedly.

Thus, in 2019 in the United States, only 0,7% of all cars sold had a manual transmission. The lion's share came from automatic and continuously variable transmissions. However, recently there has been a tendency to increase the popularity of manual transmissions.

Between 2019 and 2023, sales of vehicles equipped with manual transmissions more than doubled, reaching 1,7 percent of total sales. Yes, when compared with the total number, this is small, but analyzing the dynamics, it is easy to notice an increase.

According to experts, the trend towards increasing popularity of cars with manual transmission will continue in 2024. They are especially in demand among enthusiasts and drivers who want complete control over their own car. Among them are a considerable number of novice car owners.

Below you can read the readers' opinions about whether there are prospects for increasing the popularity of cars with manual transmission, or whether their fate is to finally give way to cars with automatic transmission.

Mechanics are already a thing of the past. I’ve been driving an automatic all my life and will continue to drive it, you don’t have to constantly pull the handle, in traffic jams you can probably go crazy like that.

– Anton shared his opinion

Well, I don’t know, I’m somehow used to driving a manual car. He is a man who gets used to everything. Once I tried to ride with an automatic transmission for some time, but I kept reflexively “pressing” the clutch. And I think that old-school drivers are all like that, and the manual transmission will still live.

– user ivanzakonov spoke out

Trends are trends, and mechanics will remain popular in Russia for a long time. Although Chinese crossovers will influence this, because they all have CVTs and automatic transmissions, it seems to me that this is a drop in the ocean.

– Tatiana suggests

Three years ago, I studied at a driving school, and out of a group of 20 people, only two drove an automatic, the rest all chose a manual. I think this is indicative, and it is unlikely that anything will change in the next 5-10 years. In the USA, of course, the situation there is most likely different, but not here.

– Maxim argues

Considering how “electric trains” are developing, automatic machines will soon go into the same hole as manual ones. In general, we will ride with one pedal, or even without them (hint at autopilot).

- summed up Arkady.
