The second generation of Hyundai Kona is already in development

Hyundai has announced the start of development of the second-generation Kona crossover. The popularity of the model forces the manufacturer to do this in order to keep up with competitors and continue to break sales records.


In the compact electric SUV class, the Hyundai Kona is the best seller in Europe. The new generation of the car should appear on sale no later than the beginning of 2025.

The fact that the development of Hyundai Kona in a new body is already underway, it became known after the publication of spy photos of prototypes seen on the streets of cities in South Korea. Although they tried to hide the crossover with covers, it is clear that this is a Hyundai Kona.



Analysts attribute the company's success with the first-generation model to the simultaneous launch of several modifications on the market. They come in petrol, diesel, MHEV and HEV hybrid plus an all-electric version.

Hyundai Kona was able to satisfy the needs of a wide range of customers. Even those who are wary of electric cars are happy to take hybrid versions of cars. They cost only 10% more on average and save about 50% fuel.

With the release of the Hyundai Bayon, which became the replacement for the i20 Active, the issue with the Kona II was resolved. This platform will be used for the new generation of the crossover.

The main feature of the car is the versatility of the base, and not its "imprisonment" only for an electric platform. Hyundai will be able to immediately offer the Kona with a wide range of engines, including a variety of hybrids and electric vehicles.

But fans of the model are more interested in the question, will the manufacturer bring out a plug-in hybrid, which was not in the first generation? This version is the last step before the transition to pure electric cars.



Plug-in hybrid technology has long been used by other automakers. For example, Renault released this version of the Captur model.

Or maybe in the new generation, Hyundai will abandon the hybrid Kona altogether, leaving only electric cars.

Hyundai says the development process for the Kona II is in its infancy. The official presentation should take place no earlier than the second half of 2023.
