Motorcycles are usually equipped with a manual transmission. They don’t have an “automatic” – this is what most Russian drivers think. And bikers are sure that automatic transmission is only available on scooters. Although, there is a variator - it is stepless and much simpler in design. The traction of a scooter depends on the engine speed. But they don’t install CVTs on motorcycles, for at least two reasons. Firstly, even on a medium-sized engine the assembly will be large and heavy. For a bike, especially a sports bike, this is important. Secondly, the efficiency of a variator is on average 15% lower than that of a gear transmission. That's why they don't put them on motorcycles.
But there is one manufacturer that produces production models with automatic transmission. They have appeared on some Honda motorcycles since 2010. Although, there is far from a classic “automatic” like on cars. Rather, something similar to the DSG from the German Volkswagen brand. Honda transmissions are called DCT. This is a regular “mechanics” with robotic switching. The most interesting thing is that the Japanese brand tried to introduce a similar technical solution back in the 70s. And they will talk about Honda motorcycles with automatic transmissions on the Mysportbike channel. The solution is interesting, but it is unlikely to become widespread. Too expensive, and motorcyclists are already accustomed to the classics...
