Rolls Royce - how the most expensive production cars in the world are made
Rolls-Royce cars are a real legend! And even though the brand has now lost its independence, being under the patronage of BMW, it continues to produce cars in the British tradition.

No matter how they treat Rolls Royce, even skeptics admit that these are the best representatives of the premium class. And the point is not the exorbitant cost, but the fact that the cars of the old years are on the move and look quite decent.

According to statistics, about 65% of all-time Rolls-Royce cars produced are still on the move. Considering that the first of them appeared in 1904, this is amazing!

How did the British manage to make such a durable car? Today we take a closer look at the process of creating modern Rolls Royces to understand what these cars are so valued for.

Brand History

It all started in 1903. It was then that the wealthy engineer Henry Royce decided to buy a car. The car seemed to the meticulous Briton of poor quality, and he strove for perfection.

As a result, Henry just took and went through the car with his own hands, fitting everything perfectly. Soon the quality of Royce's technique attracted the attention of British drivers. The car really broke down less often, and the assembly was amazing.

When Charles Rolls, a businessman selling French cars in England, saw the car, he decided to meet Henry. The merchant suggested that the engineer create a joint venture to produce the best cars in the world. Rolls Royce was founded in 1904.

Before the start of the First World War, the British were not only making representative cars - they were engaged in the production of aircraft engines. Rolls Royce engines became famous on aircraft during the First and Second World Wars.

The Rolls-Royce company has known ups and downs in its long history of existence. Repeatedly the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, but it was saved by various commercial structures and other automakers.

Following the spirit of capitalism, the British government did not even help such a symbol of Britain as Rolls Royce.

The last savior was the BMW concern, under whose wise leadership the company is now prospering, releasing several updated models.

And let evil tongues say that the symbol of Britain has turned into a BMW seventh series, only in a different design! In fact, this is far from true! It is enough to find out how a Rolls Royce car is assembled now, and everything will immediately fall into place!

Beginning - body and frame manufacturing

At a time when well-known global automakers are moving production to Asian countries, Rolls-Royce continues its age-old traditions. The most expensive serial premium cars in the world are made exclusively in Europe.

Moreover, they are assembled at three factories in turn - two of them in Germany, and the last one in England.

The body and frame for the Rolls Royce are made in Unterhollerau. Yes, a car of traditional design! At a time when even the Americans abandoned frame sedans, the British continue to produce them! Such is the commitment to tradition! But it is also passive safety, do not forget!

The body and frame are assembled from 200 aluminum parts and 300 special alloy elements with this "winged metal". If someone has ever tried to cook such a car (Audi A8 D2, for example), then he knows how difficult it is.

Workers must be of the highest qualification and specialize exclusively in working with aluminum and argon.

First of all, the frame is welded on the slipway, then body parts are hung on it. By the way, the doors are made of steel, but you should not expect them to rust, a little later you will understand why.

Performing the shaping

The fully assembled body on the frame is sent to another German city Dingolfing. There it is subjected to a full processing cycle, after which even steel will not rust in several decades.

The body is sequentially immersed in six baths with different chemical solutions, and in the last of them a special primer. After that, the future car is dried in an oven.

A body treated in this way is unlikely to be subject to corrosion, unless, of course, the car gets into a serious accident. But they usually shy away from these models on the road - if you catch it, not a single insurance will save you!

Rolls Royce main factory

All other manipulations are performed at the main production in England, in the city of Goodwood. There is the main office of the company and all the shops for final assembly, fine-tuning, plus a test site.

Traditionally, future owners come here to discuss the details of their Rolls-Royce and pick up the finished car. You can, of course, solve everything by phone and through car transporters, but tradition, sir!

color

If the garage "specialists" found out what technology the Rolls-Royce body is used to paint, they would clutch their heads and immediately raise prices. No, they are unlikely to change their principles of work, but they will begin to tell new stories to customers.

In general, Rolls Royce is painted in five layers, primed, of course, before that, and a special electrostatic coating is also applied. From above everything is poured with two layers of transparent varnish.

Only paint on the body of a standard Rolls-Royce takes 45 kg, not counting the primer. Each layer is polished, after which the deepest and most saturated color is obtained.

Assembly work

First of all, the finished body is sent to the soundproofing workshop. Everything is glued there so qualitatively that no extraneous noise will be heard in the cabin in the future.

At the next stage, wiring is laid, including the speaker system.

There is a special workshop for convertibles, where they mount a sliding roof with the mechanisms of its operation.

Next, the future car is sent to the installation site of the dashboard frame. So that it does not creak in the future, the frame is made of one-piece magnesium alloy.

Working with wood

The English factory has its own carpentry workshop. There, panels are made to order from valuable species. The tree can be any at the request of the client.

Finished panels are used for interior trim. They are carefully fitted, covered with six layers of varnish and polished. The cut patterns are specially selected, so the tree must be from the same batch.

Engine and other units

The motor that is installed on modern Rolls Royce cars is the V12 from BMW. The old L410 engine went to Bentley as a result of litigation between BMW and Volkswagen.

The average Rolls Royce Phantom gets a 6,75-liter engine developing 453 hp. With. This power unit is assembled in a separate workshop.

In the next section, the engine, transmission, axles and cardan shaft are connected into a single system. Next, you have to connect everything to the body.
Then the technically ready car is sent for finishing, where interior elements, instruments, seats and other details are mounted. The car comes out of this workshop almost ready for operation, but without wheels.

It remains to fill the Rolls Royce with technical fluids and make a quotation (application of a thin strip of paint along the middle part of the body) along the edges. The last operation is performed by a professional artist.

At the very end, the wheels are installed and the car starts. Before giving the car to the client, it is subjected to a series of tests.
An interesting four-year warranty provided by Rolls Royce - all service and maintenance is free. If the client cannot appear himself, then a specialist will come to him, even fly to another country!

Rolls-Royce is an exclusive car, one of the few that does not get cheaper with time.

Now you know that these machines are made by hand, and such work is highly valued! Buying a Rolls Royce is available to a few, but these people can be sure that the car will serve their children and grandchildren!
