The German mystery of the Soviet motorcycle Izh-49
The Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant is famous primarily for its weapons. But even before the start of the Great Patriotic War, the company decided to produce motorcycles. Production models appeared already in 1933. These were Izh-7, 8 and 9, which can hardly be called mass-produced. The reboot happened in 1946, when the plant received drawings, equipment and even a conveyor line for the production of DKW NZ-350. The first mass-produced motorcycle, the Izh-350, was a copy of the German model. We tried to reproduce it as accurately as possible. It didn’t work out very well - after all, the Germans damaged the equipment at the end of the war. By the way, there were rumors that the designers of the DKW plant “finished off” the machines and burned the drawings.

As practice has shown, the German motorcycle was not entirely suitable for use in the harsh Soviet reality. Although it was universal, the safety factor was calculated more for paved roads. In villages, this equipment could not stand up, especially considering the owners’ love for overloads. Therefore, the new model, Izh-49, was developed taking into account Soviet realities. And we didn’t forget about the design. The motorcycle turned out to be beautiful, reliable and durable. And yes, in fact, this is still the same DKW NZ-350, only globally modified. And they will talk about him on the AUTO PLUS channel.
