Tatra passenger cars have been among the cutting-edge designs since the very initial models. Moreover, the manufacturer from Kopřivnice owns a number of know-hows that are imprinted not only in local but also in foreign transport history. The plant’s “swan song” in this direction was the luxury T700 sedan. It boasted a brilliant eight-cylinder air-cooled engine, but in a number of respects it no longer met the requirements of the competition. Can this be considered the reason for the end of production of such designs? Now it’s difficult to say for sure.
After all, new political trends intervened in the matter, refuting any privileges for the party elite. Let us remember that such products were produced only for the top of the state. Lack of funding and short deadlines for implementation led to the fact that the car turned out to be a bit mixed. But the local engineering staff tried their best to preserve the historical direction in the activities of the Tatra plant. The father of the model's electrical installation is Svyatopluk Vivial, but the engine control unit is of British origin (GEMS).
Sometimes, as part of after-sales modifications, a block from the workshops of the Czech company ADCIS could be used. As a result, the T700 turned out to be not very competitive, quite expensive and no longer in demand by the government headed by democrat Vaclav Havel. The plant entered the new millennium as a manufacturer exclusively of trucks. But one of these cars ended up in the garage of Russian politician Viktor Chernomyrdin in 1996.
