The most affordable Soviet cars - the secrets of the Zaporozhian Cossacks
All Soviet motorists had licenses, but there weren’t enough cars for everyone. Therefore, even affordable Moskvich cars began to be sold by appointment around the mid-1950s. As a result, this shortage resulted in long-term queues. The situation was aggravated by the fact that MZMA became the only enterprise producing cars “for the people.” The GAZ-21 Volga was already sold only to a select few. They tried to correct the situation. No, not in the late 60s, when construction of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began. Much earlier - in those days, Kommunar stopped producing combine harvesters and switched to passenger cars. This is how “Zaporozhets”, the famous “Humpbacked”, appeared. The model, by the way, was copied from the Italian Fiat 600, but only externally. Otherwise, it is the brainchild of the “gloomy Soviet design genius.”

The ZAZ-965 turned out to be not very adapted to Soviet realities. Despite the cheapness and unexpectedly high cross-country ability, the car was small. Therefore, the next Zaporozhets, ZAZ-966, turned out to be almost a full-fledged sedan. It’s just that it has two doors – like a coupe. Most likely, this was done to increase the torsional rigidity of the body, although it did not help much. In any case, ZAZ cars are a legend of their time. Now the appearance of such a car on the street causes a storm of positive emotions. And they will talk about it on the “Alex Blare Iconic Cars” channel.
