The final part of the restoration of the national economy of the USSR after the war fell on the second half of the 60s. At that time, the country's industry was operating at full capacity, and for the transportation of products manufactured in different parts of the vast country, a reliable and easy-to-maintain truck was needed. Drivers, many of whom were combatants, did not require too much comfort. More importantly, the workhorse should let its owner down less often. After all, payment for ton-kilometers differed greatly from payment for downtime due to a breakdown. It was precisely these criteria that ZIL-164 met, the production of which began at the capital's enterprise in 1957.


The huge demand for the car is evidenced by the fact that in the seven years that it stood on the assembly line, as many as 16 major modifications of the “one hundred and sixty-fourth” appeared. It was on the ZIL-164A medium-duty truck (carrying capacity - 4 tons) that a number of promising components and parts were tested, which were later introduced on the well-known ZIL-130. One of the most common trucks of the early Brezhnev period was very often turned into special vehicles: fire engines, vans, truck cranes, etc. And at one enterprise, for the first time in the Union, they even designed a cluster cement truck.
