Iran Khodro goes to Russia with an SUV and sedans

An automaker from Iran is serious about conquering the Russian car market. The export of new machines is planned to begin this year. According to the general director of Iran Khodro, all the necessary agreements have already been reached with the Russian side.


Deliveries to the Russian Federation should become a key export market for the enterprise. Khodro is ready to increase production by 80000 vehicles, all of which will go to Russia. Thus, the total number of cars produced by the company will approach half a million.


Iran Khodro produces passenger vehicles not only under its own brand. In his arsenal are licensed Peugeot models, as well as trucks and passenger buses licensed by Mercedes-Benz. What exactly will be exported to Russia remains unknown.

At the same time, Khodro already has experience in the Russian market. Just 15 years ago there was a serious attempt to establish sales. From 2007 to 2009, Iranian cars appeared in the country's car dealerships, but the debut turned out to be a failure - our motorists flatly refused to buy cars with a "horse head", and this is exactly what the brand logo looks like. Samand sedans were licensed copies Peugeot 406, but this did not contribute to sales in any way. Cars were not in demand either among taxi drivers or ordinary car owners.


It is likely that the Iranians took into account the experience gained earlier. There is information that the Rira crossover is being prepared for the start of sales, and the assortment will also include new Dena and Tara sedans. The latter is positioned as a business class brand. The prices of Iranian cars have not yet been announced. If the manufacturer manages to get benefits for the import of finished products, we will face a serious redistribution of the market. Few people will refuse to get a modern crossover cheaper than Grants.

In addition to expanding into the Russian car market, the Iranian manufacturer plans to arrange the supply of spare parts and service equipment for repairs. With this approach and subject to affordable price tags, Khodro has every chance under the current conditions to make a successful expansion and compete not only with domestically produced models, but also with the Chinese auto industry. And there is India on the way - the market is filled with new players, and it is quite possible that this time the consumer will be the winner.
