Mercedes EQV Camper - do travelers need an electric minibus

Mercedes EQV Camper - do travelers need an electric minibus
Traveling by car is available to everyone. Even if you don't have a license, you can find someone just as passionate about the road that goes into the sunset. That's just not everyone agrees to endure many days of deprivation and spend the night in a crooked position.

Of course, there are cars designed for travel - campers. Although, specific equipment is available to units - it costs like an apartment, plus it is also inconvenient for constant use. Most days of the year, the camper just sits dejectedly in the parking lot.

There is a way out of the situation - these are kastenvagens, minibuses, suitable for everyday use. One of these is the Mercedes EQV Camper.

And then the drivers who understand Mercedes became alert. They know that an electric minibus is produced with such an index. The decision to make a camper on the Mercedes EQV chassis is a so-so idea. The problem is that it is unlikely that you will be able to go somewhere far from civilization on this motorhome.

However, Yellowcamper has been working with campers for several years now - they know what they are doing. And our task is to consider the Mercedes EQV Camper in detail.

A bit about the manufacturer

The Swiss company Yellowcamper is not just called that. She made a name for herself by converting old mail vans into full-fledged motorhomes. It is for this reason that the company is called Yellowcamper - after all, future campers were painted bright yellow, as befits the Swiss Post.

Starting with decommissioned vehicles, Yellowcamper got to the new product - Mercedes EQV Camper. Is it smart to build a travel car on an electric car chassis? If it concerns Switzerland, then yes, it makes sense.

The country has a developed “green” movement, and the infrastructure for electric cars too. To move around Switzerland and its environs, this car is enough. It's more of a publicity stunt though.

On the other hand, if desired, the charging problem can be partially solved. For example, install solar panels on the roof. Of course, this will be expensive, and Switzerland is not a country where it is always clear days. But lovers of ecology will definitely be pleased. The base Mercedes EQV Camper is enough for them.

The camper is billed as the first electric travel car in Switzerland. If necessary, the Mercedes EQV Camper will become a comfortable bus capable of transporting 8 people with a driver.

If necessary, the electric car turns into a truck. And most importantly - it is designed for traveling four. Of course, the Mercedes EQV Camper falls short of a full-fledged motorhome, but this is not a camper, but a kastenvagen.

Design Features

An electric travel car looks almost the same as a standard Mercedes EQV. At least until the tent/sleeper is raised from above.

All Mercedes EQV Campers are painted white. The fact that this is a Yellowcamper is indicated by yellow inscriptions on the sides and two stripes running through the bumper and hood of the car. The wire and socket painted on the bottom of the doors hint at the absence of a traditional internal combustion engine.

Mercedes EQV Camper appeared by chance - Yellowcamper ordered a motorhome on the chassis of a new electric car. The client was satisfied, other buyers also showed interest in the camper. The manufacturer decided to remake a small batch of Mercedes EQV in cooperation with a Mercedes dealership.

And what's inside

To make a versatile vehicle that is easy to transform, Yellowcamper used detachable SoulBoxx modules. The electric car does not have the traditional furniture typical for campers, which allows you to get the whole elements, turning the car into an ordinary passenger or cargo minibus.

A removable set with boxes is located in the luggage compartment. It has the most necessary travel equipment. The Primus Kinja gas two-burner stove will allow you to fully eat on the road without spending money on cafes and restaurants.

Perishable products can be stored in the compressor refrigerator. There is a sink and a small faucet. The water supply is small - 20 liters in a pair of tanks, but this is enough to wash the dishes and cook.

The sleeping platform for two people is placed on the upper drawers of the kitchen unit, and the other end is on the folded seats of the salon. Mattress size - 190 by 130 cm. The second sleeping unit is placed in a retractable tent on the roof.

There is a special console in the cabin, which can be transformed into a dining table between two rows of seats. There are not as many places inside the Mercedes EQV Camper as in special campers, but you can spend the night in an electric car for several days without experiencing difficulties.

Unfortunately, the model is devoid of amenities such as a toilet and shower, but these options had to be sacrificed for the sake of versatility. But Mercedes EQV Camper can be used in everyday life.

Electric car features

The most interesting thing about the new motorhome is its technical characteristics. It has a standard Mercedes EQV electric motor that develops 204 hp. With. Front-wheel drive, running battery - 90 kWh.

Good performance, if not for one "but". How relevant is the electric car in travel? The power reserve of the Mercedes EQV Camper is declared at least 310 km. True, this is in the warm season and only when traveling in an empty car with a driver and a passenger.

In winter and at full load, these parameters drop to a maximum of 274 km. The minimum electric car must travel 233 km.

Not very impressive. Experienced travelers claim that using such a car would be relevant with a power reserve of at least 500 km in the most severe conditions. Mercedes EQV Camper has half these parameters.

Of course, the electric car supports fast charging stations. The battery can be filled from 10 to 90% in just 45 minutes. All you have to do is find this station. Traveling will be difficult. If you charge the battery from household outlets, the process will drag on for several hours.

Ideally, “refuel” during overnight stays, but only a daily run of even 300 km is not enough. The journey will be delayed, although it will be a pleasure for someone - you can stop more often for sightseeing.

Yellowcamper says it is in talks with the Swiss caravanning association. Goal number one is to create a map with campsites where fast charging stations will be located. In the future, it is planned to equip these points with everything necessary for electric cars.

Can the Mercedes EQV Camper be considered a full-fledged replacement for motorhomes with traditional internal combustion engines? While the mileage in ideal conditions does not exceed 310 km - hardly. This is rather a fashionable electric car, clearly hinting that its owner is not indifferent to the environmental situation.

For an ordinary city minibus, a power reserve of even 250 km is enough, but this is not enough for traveling. Yellowcamper still needs to work on their new camper. The main nuance that should be eliminated is the installation of a more productive or additional running battery.

You can consider the option of solar panels on the roof - it will be easier to implement in technical terms and much cheaper. So far, the Mercedes EQV Camper is more of a fashion toy than a full-fledged motorhome.

As a finish line, mention must be made of the cost of the Mercedes EQV Camper. An electric car in Switzerland is offered from 6,8 million rubles - this does not include taxes and additional payments for transportation, for example.

Somehow it turns out expensive, but this is a motorhome, and even an electric one. There is a demand - Yellowcamper makes these models only on order. But a real traveler does not need such a “toy”.
