GAZ-3102 - Soviet, and then Russian car, which was conceived as a replacement for the GAZ-24. At one time, the model became the flagship of the Gorky Automobile Plant, including thanks to a number of technical innovations that first appeared in this particular car. However, for a number of reasons, including political ones, the car was available to a very limited circle of people.
In parallel with the development of the GAZ-3102, the plant was engaged in the creation of a premium limousine GAZ-14, also known as the "Seagull". It is for this reason that politics came into play. The development process of the GAZ-3102 was constantly slowed down by countless adjustments, while for the "Seagull" the green light was literally on. In general, a kind of cult of cars, correlated with a position in the state apparatus of the USSR, did not have the best effect on the speed of the release of an “average” car by Soviet standards. Nevertheless, its production nevertheless began, even if it was of a small-scale nature (about 3000 copies per year).
A video has been released on the AutoHistory YouTube channel that tells in detail about the history of the creation of the GAZ-3102. The author spoke, among other things, about a whole series of difficult political and economic problems that the developers of the machine faced. If you are interested in the history of the Soviet and Russian automotive industry, these 11 minutes will definitely not be wasted for you.
