This is what is happening, and not the first year. For the first time such a "competition" was held in 1988 in a tiny town in the United States with a population of 600 people. They did it purely for the entertainment of farmers. Everyone liked it so much that in the following years the fame of the combine derby gradually spread to the rest of the states.

Surprisingly, collisions on combines in an attempt to literally destroy the opponent's equipment is a very safe event that does without injury. Almost.
