Most of the boats are primitive, some are disposable. The simple design has its advantages. For example, wooden boats are harder for patrol boats to detect electronically and aircraft. However, one should not think that all smuggling submarines are completely "primitive". There are vessels capable of carrying several tons of cargo and costing millions of dollars. But the lion's share of this money is spent not on materials or equipment, but on their delivery to the construction site. After all, the "shipyard" is usually located in the jungle, river mouths.

Modern homemade submarines are becoming more and more advanced and many of them already resemble factory designs. Although, they do not pass tests, and there are no GOSTs in the forest.
