Moskvich-21406 "Kolkhoznik" - how the USSR improved the car due to simplifications

Cars in the Soviet Union there was not enough for everyone who wanted it. Potential drivers had money, but they couldn't buy a car quickly. They had to stand in long queues, waiting until they sent the coveted "postcard". Money was found immediately. Relatives, friends and even trade unions at work helped. It is clear that in such conditions there was no time for variety. They took what was given.

But cars in the USSR, however, were produced differently. For example, in 1978, the party gave the AZLK plant the task of giving the village a machine adapted for difficult conditions. Without thinking twice, AZLK engineers, under the leadership of Tkachenko, prepared a special version - Moskvich-21406. Outwardly, this car was no different from the standard one, but there were enough design changes in it. For example, the engine was derated to run on low-octane gasoline. There was a lot of this fuel on collective farms, unlike AI-93. Of course, the maximum speed of the car decreased, but this was not relevant for the countryside. There's still not much to accelerate on bad roads. The ground clearance has been increased, and the rear suspension has been strengthened. Instead of 6 sheets of springs, there were 9 - it was possible to load more and carry them farther. And about other features of Moskvich-21406, the author of the AUTO HISTORY channel will tell.
Do you remember the Soviet cars of the Moskvich brand?
