MiG-110 - how one unrealized project "buried" the previous one
The Mikoyan Design Bureau is better known for its fighter jets and other military vehicles. However, at the end of the 80s, the organization, unexpectedly for milestones, won the competition for the creation of a multi-purpose civil aircraft with a take-off weight of 15-18 tons and a payload of up to 6 tons. -24. An inexpensive aircraft was required, capable of landing on unpaved and rolled snow strips up to 26 km long, which the flight crew would quickly master.

The corresponding Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation was issued in 1994. Oil workers, gas workers, geologists and rescuers really needed the car. Initially, literally everyone was actively involved in the aircraft: the project was supported by the state (including financially). And in 1997, the public was presented with a ready-made full-size layout.

A little later, the car was "blew" in the TsAGI wind tunnel: the results showed that the design scheme was chosen correctly. The prototype began to be built in Nizhny Novgorod (Sokol plant). What was the MiG-110?

Operational advantages and features

The designed aircraft could carry cargo and passengers. In addition, there were modifications for use on the water (with floats), sanitary and operational options. Also, the MiG-110 could patrol gas and oil pipelines, forest areas, reconnoiter ice conditions and look for schools of fish. A training version of the machine was also envisaged.

At the same time, for example, it was possible to convert an aircraft from a transport aircraft into a cargo-passenger aircraft under the conditions of any airfield. The MiG-103 could carry quite large equipment: a minivan car, an ordinary passenger car with a trailer, or standard air containers, for example, ZAK-1 or 2AK-3, fit into it. The cargo compartment was similar in volume to the An-72 compartment.

Design

The aircraft had a two-beam construction scheme, which simplifies the "conversion" into the desired modification. Another plus was the possibility of a close access of cars to the ramp for loading / unloading. The development of the aircraft was led by the most experienced designer Matyuk Nikolai Zakharovich (and this despite the fact that in the fall of 1999 he turned 90 years old!). Largely due to his perseverance, the aircraft received a non-standard, but very successful aerodynamic design. The car has a tail in the form of the letter "P", wings with engine nacelles are located high.

The aircraft had good handling comparable to the best foreign models of this class. The chassis is made in the form of three racks, one of which is in the nose of the fuselage. The wheels are specially designed for unpaved surfaces. Technical parameters of MiG-110:

✅ wingspan, length, height - 25, 18,8 and 5,4 m
✅ maximum takeoff weight - 18 tons
✅ power of two engines - 5 thousand "horses"
✅ average and maximum speed - 500 and 550 km/h
✅ altitude and range - 8 and up to 3700 km

The plane could fit up to 5,5 tons of payload or 48 passengers (20 paratroopers). The car is driven by two pilots.

Power point

This is a pair of TV7-117S engines that has long proven itself from the best side, working with propellers of the SV-34 type (six blades). Their main feature is low noise during rotation. The engines are located under the wings in engine nacelles, smoothly turning into a beam on which the tail unit is fixed. The power unit in the Russian Federation and the CIS countries received a certificate of validity in 1997. The motor is structurally made in the form of nine modules: replacement of any of them does not require further adjustments and can be done right at the airport. They wanted to mount the TV7-117ST modification on the Il-112V. Two versions of the engine are currently in use: TVS7-117S on the Il-114 and TV7-117SD on the An-140. The turboshaft TV7-117VK is installed on the Ka-50, 52, and Mi-28.

Specific fuel consumption complies with the best European and American standards and is 180 g/e in cruising flight mode. l. With. hour. The declared engine life is 20 thousand hours (overhaul period is 6 thousand hours). During the operation of the MiG-110, it was allowed to fly with one idle power unit, which had a positive effect on safety. It also includes two- or even three-fold redundancy of all the main systems of the aircraft.

On-board equipment

The aircraft was equipped with the latest navigational instruments at that time. The aircraft could fly in any weather, day or night. The required microclimate was maintained in the passenger compartment, the cargo compartment was equipped with automatic mechanisms for loading / unloading and even equipped with a separate air conditioning system.

Prospects for the MiG-110

The project involved not only the state treasury, but also the Government of Moscow. There were even foreign investors: in 1998, Austria provided almost 100 million dollars for the construction of a prototype and the preparation of documentation. The issue of building the MiG-110 in this country was considered. Then it was planned to deliver the MiG-29 to Austria. Some structural elements have already begun to be produced at the aviation plant in Lukhovitsy, which is part of the MIG corporation. Here it was supposed to organize large-scale production.

After the successful demonstration of the layout, it seemed to everyone: the aircraft was doomed to success. Photo: YouTube.com

At the beginning of the 7,5s, the estimated cost of the aircraft did not exceed 40 million greenbacks. Taking into account the payment for design work, testing, etc., the costs will pay off approximately after the sale of 50-200 units of equipment. The need of the Russian market for aircraft of this class was estimated at about 1200 aircraft. And this is only a minimum - in the future, as expected, the country will need at least 700 aircraft, and another XNUMX - the CIS countries.

An experimental model of an aircraft for testing was released in 2001: at the same time, the necessary documentation was issued. In 2003, they planned to open a separate building at the Lukhovitsky aircraft plant - a new workshop building with three assembly lines. And 3 models of aircraft were supposed to descend from them: MiG-110, Tu-334 and MiG-AT. At the same plant, it was supposed to conduct pre-sale tests of the liners before they were sent to customers. At the same time, some components of the MiG-110, elements of equipment were produced at another enterprise - in the capital's HRC them. Voronin.

What's the result

In 1998, for unknown reasons, some of the leading designers of the Mikoyan Design Bureau, who were involved in the MiG-110 project, moved to the Sukhoi bureau along with the developments on the aircraft. For some reason, the state and investors also lost interest in the car, and the project was actually abandoned (it was officially said: "The MiG-110 is frozen for now"). Nevertheless, it is not worth saying unequivocally that everything is lost, the money wasted in vain. At the Sukhoi Design Bureau, former "Mikoyan" engineers began to develop the Su-80, which even looks very much like the MiG-110. Unlike him, they began to build a new car and showed it in flight at MAKS-2005.

However, the fate of the "regionalist" Su-80 also developed unenviably and is similar to the MiG-110. Only here, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 has already acted as a new source of interest, to which everyone's attention, including funding, has been riveted. We needed production facilities. And they were found in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, where they had already begun to assemble the Su-80. It's amazing how many aircraft models have been adversely affected by the SSJ already flying in the skies! And the history of the MiG-110 quietly ended there.
