Honda Dio - the most popular scooters in Russia from a famous Japanese brand

Honda Dio - the most popular scooters in Russia from a famous Japanese brand
There was a time when scooters began to appear en masse in Russia. Small-cubic Japanese technology was in demand among people who do not have rights or are deprived of them for various reasons. For example, in teenagers, those who like to drink a little, or simply those who could not get an IV for medical reasons.

In principle, this was the case during the existence of the Soviet Union. Only in the USSR, only mopeds were produced - they are more difficult to manage than scooters. Japanese "stools" are the simplest, there are no gearboxes there. Sit down, unscrew the throttle and forward.

But then a category was introduced for small-capacity vehicles, which removed most of the scooters from the roads. On the one hand, this is good - some rode mopeds like kamikazes. On the other hand, quite adequate people also suffered.

But they managed to bring a lot of small-capacity Japanese scooters to Russia. Then they began to be replaced by Chinese clones. Today we will talk about Honda Dio in all generations. This is one of the most popular Japanese scooters on the Russian used market.

First generation

The Honda Dio debuted in 1988. The first generation is known as the AF-18. Despite more than advanced years and huge mileage, these small mopeds still roam the roads of different countries of the world.

The first generation Honda Dio is a typical urban model, although we have successfully used them in the countryside. Small wheels? It doesn’t matter, but light weight will help pull the equipment out of any dirt.

By the way, the model with the AF-25 index also belongs to the first generation. It is outwardly distinguished by the presence of a disc front brake.

The first generation Honda Dio has a telescopic fork. The power of the 50 cc two-stroke engine is 6,4 liters. With. Oil does not need to be mixed with gasoline on its own - just pour it into a separate tank. Its volume of 0,8 liters is enough for 1 kilometers.

The maximum speed is 60 km/h. With a strong desire, it can be increased by 15 km, but for this you will have to change:

✅ Piston
✅ Switch
✅ Variator

Of course, the first generation Honda Dio looks outdated - its plastic is square. But the model is simple. These scooters are sold from 20 thousand rubles. Unfortunately, finding the perfect option is almost impossible. Owners of older models usually service and repair them with Chinese parts. Japanese in such a moped is often no longer left.

The second generation

In 1990, the new Honda Dio appears. This model has indexes AF-27/28. Technically, the scooter has not changed much. The Japanese decided that there was no need to modify the successful small-cubic capacity, which was sold in huge numbers. It was simply worked on externally, making the design rounded and modern - in order to keep up with the competition.

The engine was left, having finalized it to 6,8 liters. With. And the AF-28 SR and ZX versions have a power of 7 liters. With.

The cost of the second generation Honda Dio is approximately the same as that of the AF-18 - from 20 thousand rubles. It is already better to fill this scooter with AI-95 gasoline. Fuel consumption is about 2,5 liters per 100 km.

The same urban scooter as the previous generation. Suitable for rural use, but it is better to modify it:

✅ Put a stiffer shock absorber
✅ Change the oil in the front fork to the most viscous
✅ Look for tires with at least universal tires

By the way, all Honda Dio scooters, except for the latest, revived generation, are one and a half seaters. This means that they are designed for one driver and an occasional passenger. But for Russia, this is relevant only for teenagers. Two adult men can only fit in the seat after a month-long hunger strike.

Third Generation

The latest Dio 2T scooters are known as AF-34/35, they appeared in 1994. The most popular Dio in Russia, most likely in the world. No wonder, they were produced for exactly 10 years - until 2004.

Honda scooter fans claim that this two-stroke is the best. This is true - its engine, new, by the way, has a capacity of up to 7,2 liters. With. For comparison, the first four-stroke develops only 5 hp. With. And this is not taking into account the fact that the two-stroke unit is “meaner”.

The model was produced in six different versions. The base one is the Live Dio with drum brakes. The sports version of the ZX is considered the best.
The scooter is also simple constructively. Therefore, you can maintain and repair it yourself, of course, if you have the minimum skills of a locksmith. The only serious nuance is the diagonal arrangement of the piston group cylinder. Because of this, it is necessary to partially disassemble the power unit.

The third generation Honda Dio is inexpensive - 35-40 thousand on average. The main thing when choosing is to find a copy without "China", serviced by original Japanese spare parts.

Fourth generation

The first Honda Dio with an economical engine appeared in 2001. This is a model with a four-stroke engine, "strangled" for the sake of the environment. Fans accepted her coldly, called her "vegetable".

Gradually, the scooter became more and more modern in appearance. Photo: Youtube.com

The Japanese manufacturer was forced to abandon two-stroke scooters - the country introduced a ban on the production of such engines. They say they smoke a lot, they spoil the environment.

A small digression from the topic. Not everyone understands why motorcycles have long been transferred to four-stroke engines, but not scooters. It's all about smallness. 50-cc engines are already weak, so they tried to increase power by all means.

The fourth generation of the Honda Dio is known as the AF-56/57/63. Of course, the engine power has decreased - up to 5 liters. With. But fuel consumption pleased - about 1,5 liters per 100 km.

A four-stroke engine is heavier than a two-stroke, but Japanese engineers were able to cope with this advantage. They ditched the steel frame in favor of an aluminum one. It does not rot, but is inferior in margin of safety, so this model is not very suitable for rural areas and large owners.

By the way, the engine is not just a four-stroke - it is also liquid-cooled. This complicates the design, but there will be no problems with overheating.

In the Russian used market, four-stroke scooters account for about 20% of the total. Probably the reason for this is the cost - from 38 rubles. Yes, and these models are frankly "vegetable". They are more suitable for leisurely people.

Fifth generation

In 2003, a new Honda Dio appeared. It is believed that this is the fifth generation, although in fact, rather a restyling of the fourth. The model received the index AF-62/68 and a new engine. It has become even less powerful than in the previous generation - up to 4,1 liters. With. “Thank you” for this must be said to the tightened environmental standards.

The model was produced until 2012, gradually losing popularity. Nothing strange - few people liked such a “vegetable” scooter.

New Honda Dio

The latest generation is a full-fledged two-seat model with a volume of 107 cm3. Power 8,4 liters. with., so that the "stool" turned out to be fast. The full name is Honda Dio Delux 110.

This model is already larger, and it is suitable for the village. Photo: Youtube.com

In Russia, this model is rare. The cost is from 160 thousand rubles. It has nothing to do with the old "Dio", but is more suitable for the countryside, thanks to the enlarged wheels.

Should I buy a Honda Dio now? If you can find a good copy of the second or third generation. Four-stroke models are also worth paying attention to those who are in no hurry and want to save fuel.
