T-4: "Altaets" served faithfully

T-4: "Altaets" served faithfully
This is a tractor, nicknamed by the people at the place of its production "Altayets" - a real brutal hard worker, who was popular both among farmers and in other sectors of the national economy of the USSR. The car was produced for a relatively short time: from 1964 to 1970, but its further modification did not leave the assembly line until 1998. T4A can still be found in the fields today.

The machine has earned respect due primarily to reliability, as well as simplicity of design. The tractor could be found both on the fields of collective farms, state farms, and construction sites. This was facilitated by the versatility of the unit, to which all kinds of equipment was attached: for cultivating the land, caring for crops. On some modifications, a power take-off shaft was provided. The slight pressure on the ground kept the topsoil intact, which was important for high yields.

The Altaets was in the fourth traction class, the T-150 was in the third, and the K-701 was in the fifth. At the same time, the T-4 pressed on the ground with a force of 0,5 kg / sq. cm, and its two closest competitors - 1,4-2 kg / sq. cm. cm and 1,5-2,5 kg / sq. see respectively. T-4 had good traction "ability" and therefore could be used as a bulldozer. Plus, it had a high cross-country ability and was in demand in forestry.

What can be said about the design

The power source of the T4 is a 130-horsepower diesel six-cylinder A-01 engine. Fuel comes from a 320-liter tank, which is enough for a couple of work shifts. The car starts with an electric starter, which in those days was an incomparable plus. However, just in case, there was also a gasoline “launcher” with a cord: the tractor was operated quite normally without a battery.

At one time, Soviet farms willingly bought an inexpensive car. Photo: YouTube

The manual transmission provided eight forward gears and a couple of reverse gears. The clumsy and slow tractor developed no more than 9,3 km / h. However, he didn't need more. Dimensions:

✅ length, width and height - 4,65, 1,95 and 2,84 m
✅ wheelbase - 2,52 m
✅ clearance - 0,371 m

To change the direction of movement, you had to first turn off the clutch. The basis of the design is a rigid spar frame. The towing device is universal and allows the use of various mounted implements. A bulldozer blade can be installed ahead. Hydraulics - separate. This means that the control of attachments is carried out through its system.

Cabin

She is double. If you say that inside - the Spartan atmosphere, it means to say nothing. In the first tractor models, they didn’t think about heat and sound insulation at all from the word “completely”. Although heating and ventilation were still present. Noise and vibration are constant companions of the machine operator in this machine.

Imagine what it was like on hauls when the tractor shuddered at the slightest road bump. But on the field you can "rest" - the move is more or less smooth: after all, shock absorbers are still provided. And in terms of stability and power, the unit even surpassed the common DT-75: wider tools (for example, seeders) were attached to the T4.

Cons

They were and this is not only a noisy uncomfortable cabin. The tractor, due to its large dimensions and weight, did not maneuver well. Despite the simplicity of the design, access to some nodes, parts was difficult due to poor layout. Also, tractor drivers complained about the short service life of the tracks, which often failed at the most inopportune time.

Price

It is clear that it is impossible to buy a new car. But used samples are still found and are even in demand despite the difficulties with “procuring” spare parts. For a used copy, they ask for 150-200 thousand rubles, depending on the condition.
