Amazing electric tractors from the USSR
In the USSR, there were far-reaching plans for the electrification of agriculture. Of course, there were concerns not only about the environment, but also about the shortage of gasoline and diesel both in the first years after the formation of the Soviet Union and long after the end of the Second World War.

The first attempt to assemble an electric tractor took place in 1928. An electric motor with an operating voltage of 220 volts and a power of 14,5 kW was put on a conventional tractor. Power was supplied through an electric cable 250 meters long wound on a drum. The solution was not very successful, and already in the 1930s they tried again. This time, the “thermal” tractor of the ChTZ-60 model became the base. The motor was powered by 1 kV AC voltage, giving out a power of 35 kW. For power supply, a mobile substation and a connection in the form of an electric cable 800 meters long were used.

The first truly successful project of an electric tractor in the USSR was created only in 1937. It was also based on the ChTZ-60 and was named VMIE-2. You will learn more about it, as well as about five more models of electric tractors, in the video on the YouTube channel "AUTO HISTORY".
