
Rare modifications of the GAZ-53 that did not hit the conveyor
Most people are used to seeing the GAZ-53 as a kind of “standard” workhorse in a monotonous and dull “uniform.” Meanwhile, the car has been produced since 1959 (the plant still produces spare parts for it) and during this time there have been many attempts not only to change its appearance, but also to give it a car some special qualities.
For example, a 53 GAZ-11-1972 with a square front end is a desire to somehow improve the exterior, make it more modern. And inside, too, you can see the changes: a completely different instrument panel, a steering wheel reminiscent of the Volgovsky. Even access to the power unit was simplified. At the same time, the frame was strengthened so that trailers could be pulled. It was assumed that the model before the overhaul will pass at least 250 thousand km. But something went wrong and the case was limited to a few prototypes.
There were other modifications: for example, a three-axle GAZ-53 with high traffic. But of greater interest is the hybrid, on which ... caterpillars are installed in the middle. When driving off-road, the car rose and did not touch the ground with its wheels, but rode on tracks! But the model also did not go into the series - it turned out to be complex and cumbersome.
