New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS - look forward to next year

Engineers at Porsche's motorsport division have managed to free up an extra 79 hp from their work on the turbocharged 4,0-liter V6 engine under the hood of the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS. Thanks to their efforts, the final output of the gasoline engine is 493 hp, and the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h now takes no more than 3,4 seconds. The speed limit for car is at 315 km/h.

All the power of the turbocharged six is sent to the rear axle via a 7-speed PDK automatic transmission, which Porsche says shifts at lightning speed.

The tuning of the novelty did not end with the modernization of the engine. Engineers reduced the car's weight by replacing the hood and front fenders with carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Lightweight carpeting was installed, door handles were replaced with lightweight traction belts. The amount of thermal insulation of the cabin has decreased, and the massive rear window has given way to an alternative, less heavy part. Instead of rear windows, air intakes are installed, directing air flows directly to the engine. Thanks to the measures taken, the specific engine power per ton of vehicle weight was 348 hp.

Porsche has also optimized the aerodynamics of the GT4. A swan-neck rear wing inspired by the 911 RSR GT race car, new air vents and an adjustable front diffuser – together with a 30mm drop in ride height compared to the standard Cayman – increase downforce by 10% compared to the GT4.

In the final testing phase, former rider and brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister completed a shorter version of the 12,8-mile Nordschleife in 7 minutes 4,51 seconds. The lap time was 7 minutes 9,3 seconds, almost as fast as the previous Porsche 911 GT3 RS. At the same time, the novelty is 23,6 seconds faster than the existing GT4. From this we can conclude that the mechanical and aerodynamic improvements were not in vain and gave a really impressive result.

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is priced from £108, which is £370 more than the GT10,6. The first vehicles are expected to be delivered from the UK to other markets as early as March 31.
