Instead of Subaru WRX STI will release an electric car Solterra

Subaru has officially announced that the place of the legendary WRX STI will be taken by the Solterra electric crossover. Fans of the brand met this decision with caution - they were ready for the fact that the tightening of environmental standards would force them to abandon the powerful gasoline turbo engine, but not for such a radical replacement.


The Japanese manufacturer announced back in early 2022 that there would be no new generation of the Subaru WRX STI. Despite all the legend car, it has long been balancing on the edge of unprofitability. There is no point in developing a new generation model, especially since environmental standards simply will not allow the use of powerful turbocharged engines running on gasoline.

But Subaru's dedicated STI division continues to work, and not just for the rally team. Now their task is to create a new "civilian" car with an electric motor.



The other day, Subaru revealed that they had already chosen a model to replace the WRX STI. This will be the Solterra STI crossover, which they promise to put into mass production by the beginning of 2025.

Subaru officials said internal combustion engines had lost the war. Plans to electrify the STI series are a forced measure and a chance to keep the legend alive.

But it is hardly possible to call a compact crossover a full-fledged replacement for the Subaru WRX STI. Moreover, this is a common platform with the Toyota bZ4X, so there is no need to talk about continuity. But for the Subaru brand, this is the only chance to somehow preserve its sports modification of the “civilian” model. The manufacturer hopes that the popularity of compact crossovers, coupled with the succession of STI "shoot".



Most likely, the Toyota bZ4X will be seriously altered - the car will be lowered, the tires will be replaced with low-profile ones, the suspension will be finalized, making it stiffer.

How much the new Subaru Solterra STI will cost is not yet reported. According to preliminary forecasts, the price should exceed the cost of the gasoline model twice. Now for the current Subaru WRX STI in Japan and the USA they are asking from 2,4 million rubles. They plan to offer an ordinary electric Solterra from 3,5 million. By simple arithmetic, you can deduce a price of about 5 rubles.

In the next few months, the manufacturer promised to reveal more information about the Subaru Solterra STI.
