Toyota Highlander will get a gasoline engine with a turbine

Toyota Highlander 2022 model year spotted on Chinese roads. The crossover has a turbocharged gasoline engine, which is hinted at by the nameplates on the back. The manufacturer decided to add not an electric modification to the hybrid, but a version with a traditional internal combustion engine.


Toyota hasn't officially unveiled its refreshed 2022 Highlander SUV with a regular engine, but this car is actively undergoing the testing stage, as evidenced by photographs taken by unknown eyewitnesses.

Interested fans began to learn the details, after which some technical nuances of the new version of the crossover were revealed. Representatives of Toyota said that the model will receive a 2,5-liter engine and a turbine under the hood. No hybrid power plants are expected to be paired with it.



They promise that the premiere of the turbocharged gasoline modification will take place in a couple of months, although official sales will not begin until June.

It should be recalled that the current Toyota Highlander, which is now sold in China, is equipped with a non-alternative power plant. Under the hood is a 2,5-liter naturally aspirated engine, paired with an electric motor.

But the car seen on the roads in China had a badge on the back that said "D-4S T". This hints that under the hood is a turbocharged two-liter engine, not a 2,5.



Eyewitnesses also report that the prototype version of the Toyota Highlander has some strange tube structures fixed in the exhaust system area. This suggests that the tests are close to the final stage and the manufacturer is measuring the parameters of the model, trying to ensure that they comply with environmental standards.

Someone does not understand why make a gasoline version of the crossover, when it would be more logical to prepare a car with an electric motor. But everything is explained quite simply - the cost. Even hybrid versions of Toyota cars are much more expensive than gasoline ones. And the price of electrical modifications can be many times higher.

It turns out that the appearance of a gasoline Toyota Highlander will attract additional buyers due to its conditional budget. The manufacturer has already announced several technical characteristics of the turbocharged crossover.
