Nissan unveiled an unusual and powerful pickup truck

The new product received the model index Frontier Pro. car presented at the Shanghai Auto Show. Despite the familiar name, the car is not a reworked version of the American Fronter.

The model is the result of joint work with Chinese manufacturer Dongfeng as part of the Zhengzhou Nissan enterprise. The pickup will be the first plug-in hybrid in the history of the Japanese brand.

The design of the car is made in the style of Chinese SUVs and, in particular, the Z9 model from Dongfeng. However, there was also room for references to the history of Nissan.

According to the company's representative, the three LED stripes above the front emblem are a tribute to the iconic D21 Hardbody model. The latter was produced in the 80s.

The interior of the pickup also echoes its Chinese "brother". The center of attention is the 14,6-inch touchscreen display of the multimedia system. The seats have modern heating, ventilation and massage functions. The luggage compartment is optionally equipped with a roll-up "roof" with an electric drive.

The Frontier Pro's performance is driven by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. The gasoline unit works in tandem with an electric motor integrated into the transmission.

The total power of this tandem reaches 408 hp with a peak torque of 800 Nm. According to the manufacturer, the pickup can travel up to 135 km in purely electric mode. However, the value was measured according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, which does not always coincide with that in real-life conditions.

On the "nice" side, Frontier Pro offers a four-wheel drive system and an electromechanical rear differential lock. In addition, the rear has an air suspension. The combination of these factors clearly suggests that Nissan has created a partially electric, but quite a "real" SUV, and not a crossover in the guise of a pickup truck.

The "green" component of the car has an additional advantage in the form of the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. It allows using the charge of the traction battery for external consumers. The power is supported up to 6 kW. The option will be useful for lovers of outdoor recreation.

Together with Chinese partners, Nissan plans to release 9 new models. Photo: YouTube.com

Assembly of Frontier Pro will begin before the end of the calendar year. The Dongfeng plant has been selected as the production site. On the one hand, this may have a positive effect on the final cost of the pickup, but on the other hand, not every fan of the Japanese brand will like the Chinese assembly.

Despite its debut in Shanghai, Frontier Pro is expected to be released in other markets as well. However, the specific geography and cost of the new product have not yet been announced.

By mid-2027, Nissan plans to launch nine electrified models at the Celestial Empire facilities. Among them is the N7 sedan. Subsequently, the company's management wants to combine Navara and Frontier into a single platform that will support both classic fuel modifications and hybrid ones.
