A real heavyweight – the legendary helicopter has returned to the Arkhangelsk aviation fleet
The aviation and technical base of the second Arkhangelsk united aviation detachment has returned the iconic helicopter Mi-26T. Previously, the machine was stored in special conditions for 13 years.
The prototype underwent maintenance and preparation. Compliance with operational characteristics was confirmed after the first test flight.
The Mi-26 is not only a "large" helicopter, but also one of the most powerful in the world. This record-breaker remains an indispensable tool in the field of transporting heavy and bulky cargo.

The return of the aircraft to the joint air squadron allows for a significant expansion of the enterprise's technical capabilities. The use of the Mi-26 is especially justified when working in remote and hard-to-reach areas of the region.
The machine is capable of lifting up to 20 tons of payload into the air. This indicator makes this helicopter one of the most load-bearing of serial ones worldwide. In addition to impressive dimensions, the result is achieved through the use of powerful engines.
The Mi-26 most often uses a pair of D-136 engines, which were also used in some modifications of the Yak-42. The takeoff power of the power plant reaches 11,4 thousand, and the cruising power is 6,1 thousand hp.
The engines are connected to the main gearbox via freewheel clutches. The design feature allows disconnecting the idle engine from the transmission in emergency situations. Torque is transmitted via the main gearbox to the main and tail rotors.
The helicopter's cargo bay is equipped with a ramp to facilitate loading. A similar device is located in front. Thanks to it, it becomes possible to disembark passengers on the ground without the use of additional technical means.
The design of this helicopter began in the 70s at the Moscow plant. The model was positioned as a replacement for the outdated Mi-6 and Mi-10. The machine is a universal solution capable of operating reliably in non-standard conditions - mountains, taiga, extreme temperatures.
As of 2017, the second Arkhangelsk united aviation squadron has 4 Mi-26 aircraft on its balance sheet. The enterprise is a regional company. Its main area of activity is the transportation of passengers, cargo and correspondence. In addition, the squadron is engaged in aerial photography, construction and installation, and loading and unloading operations in the Arctic.
