"Time Machine" - Mercedes-Benz Releases Retro Version of G-Class
The German brand has introduced a limited edition of the iconic G450d SUV. The modification received an unusual index "Stronger Than the 1980s".
The Mercedes-Benz team used the style and “atmosphere” of the classic G-Class line as inspiration. The version combines the technological “stuffing” of the current generation of the brand’s SUVs with the visual elements of the original W460 series.
One of the key accents of the exterior design is the retro-style body color scheme. The configurator offers two shades – Agave Green and Colorado Beige.

Notably, the 500th G-Class model, which was unveiled in 2023, was finished in the same green color. The references to the original W460, of course, do not end there.
The list of visual features also includes the following elements:
✅ orange turn signals
✅ five-spoke alloy wheels
✅ matte black wheel arch extensions, bumpers, mirrors and radiator grille
The rear of the SUV features the brand's classic emblem. The hood also features a retro-style three-pointed star. They were made using drawings from the company's archive. At the same time, when the door is opened, the brand's signature slogan is projected onto the ground: "G - Stronger Than Time".
The nostalgia theme continues in the SUV's cabin. The seats feature a gray checkered fabric as the central upholstery insert, just like the classic G-Wagen. The rest of the trim is made of black leather with decorative stitching. The retro atmosphere is somewhat reduced by the multimedia system with a large display and a digital instrument panel.

Potential buyers will have two powertrain configurations to choose from. In the first case, the technical basis will be the G450d modification with an in-line diesel engine. The unit's volume is 3 liters, and the power reaches 362 hp with a peak torque of 750 Nm.
The second version is based on the G500, which is also known as the G550 in the North American market. The engine capacity is identical, but it is “powered” by gasoline. The peak power of this configuration is 440 hp. The engine is more dynamic than its diesel “brother”, but not as powerful – the “torque” is 140 Nm less.
The special edition will be limited to 460 units. It is noteworthy that the number is a reference to the factory index of the original G-Wagen W460. The Stronger Than the 1980s will be assembled at the same factory in the Austrian city of Graz.

The plant is located at the foot of the Schöckl mountain, the traditional testing ground for all generations of the G-Class. Remarkably, only one industrial robot is used in the workshops, with most of the work being done manually.
Mercedes-Benz management chose Great Britain as the debut sales market. There, the limited edition G-Class will cost from 153 thousand pounds (16,6 million rubles).
Given the limited edition and sales geography, purchasing a special edition G-Wagen in Russia will be, to put it mildly, difficult. And the price tag will clearly be "sky-high". For example, a new copy of the current generation G450d will cost us about 27 million rubles.
