It turned out to be more expensive and longer – the fifth stage of production of LMS-901 “Baikal” has begun
Work on the release of a multi-purpose Aircraft LMS-901 continues. The initiator of the accelerated modernization of "Baikal" was the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. The executive authority announced a tender for the implementation of experimental design work (R&D).
It includes fixing errors and equipping the aircraft with new units. The plan will be implemented within the framework of the state program "Development of the aviation industry".
It includes nine key stages, which must be completed by December 17, 2027. The announced competition implies conducting R&D on the fifth point of the general plan. The application deadline is March 26.

The subsection "LMS-5" includes the final integration of the VK-800SM engines with the new AV-901 propeller. The key requirement for the contractor is to prepare the aircraft in such a way that it passes certification for compliance with technical specifications.
In order to allow the Baikal to be tested, it is necessary not only to correct errors and adapt the aircraft to new units, but also to modernize the test benches. Subsequently, it is planned to expand the scope of application of the power plant, which will also require additional checks and amendments to the design documentation.
Thus, after completion of the “LMS-5” stage, the aircraft must meet the readiness level of not lower than “UGT=8” and the following parameters:
✅ cruising speed – 250 km/h
✅ run-up distance – 380 m
✅ operational "ceiling" - 3 thousand m
✅ flight range – 745 and 1520 km with maximum and half load
Let us recall that the design of the LMS-901 started in mid-October 2019. The first point of the plan consisted of creating sketches, technical documentation and a debut prototype. The latter was intended for static testing.

Two years later, the prototype was upgraded to a flight-ready version. Three LMS-901 prototypes are currently ready. Two more aircraft are on the way.
In parallel with the creation of the Baikal, the VK-800SM engine and propeller for it were being developed. Three power plants were manufactured under the 2022 contract.
Despite all the difficulties and recent design problems, the modifications and preparation for certification of LMS-901 should be completed by next year. After the current stage is completed, all tests are expected to be passed and adjustments to the design documentation will be made. The financial burden at this stage will amount to 10,3 billion rubles.
