Toyota invests $ 461 million in Kentucky, and Lexus ES travels back to Japan

Toyota Motor North America plans to invest $461 million in a large assembly facility located in Georgetown, Kentucky. Through investments, it is planned to significantly expand the range of engines and open up new horizons in terms of the production of new automotive products, taking into account the future electrification of cars.

Where will the money go?

Part of the investment will go towards the production of a 2,4-litre turbocharged petrol engine for installation in a wide range of cars, currently manufactured in the USA. Interestingly, the same engine is used in the design of the new Lexus NX 2022 model year.

A large part of the investment will be used by the company to improve production. In particular, it is planned to purchase modern industrial equipment, master new technologies and layouts to increase the flexibility and speed of the assembly plant. Ultimately, the planned improvements should be a good help for the future transition of production to the manufacture of predominantly electrified vehicles.

Toyota has not forgotten about people either - after the modernization of the assembly complex in Kentucky, about 1400 jobs for specialists of various profiles will be created here. Some of them currently work through Kelly Services. Today, the complex employs more than 9000 people.

Susan Elkinton, president of Toyota Motor North America, said in her address that the company's most technologically advanced assembly plant must adapt to rapidly changing customer needs. This also applies to the rapidly growing demand for cars with electric motors. In this regard, Toyota does not plan to limit itself in investments aimed at physical and strategic changes to create advanced manufacturing.

What about the Lexus ES?

As part of its announcement, Toyota also announced its intention to bring production of Lexus ES hybrid sedans back to Japan. Moreover, this will be done before the model undergoes major changes as part of the planned release of the new model in 2025. Until that moment comes, the company will produce commercially successful Camry, Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid models. As for the Toyota Avalon sedan, it was discontinued in the US in 2021.
