UAZ conquers Africa: large-unit assembly to begin in Ethiopia

Russian automaker UAZ launches assembly production in cooperation with Ethiopian company Bazra Motors cars in Ethiopia.

Under the signed agreement, the plant will be located in the city of Kombolcha (Amhara state) and will be engaged in large-unit assembly of Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant vehicles from supplied vehicle kits.

The following models are planned for production: UAZ Patriot, Pickup, Profi, Hunter SUV and classic SGR line cars. The first 64 vehicle kits are ready for shipment, and the plant should reach its design capacity of 3000 units per year by the end of 2025.

The decision to establish an assembly plant became part of UAZ’s strategy to expand its presence in international markets.

The African continent is a promising region with a high demand for tough and easy-to-use vehicles that can perform where others fail.

Russian SUVs have already gained popularity in countries with extreme climate and road conditions, making them a suitable choice for Ethiopia.

Production will begin with large-unit assembly, which will reduce logistics costs and customs duties, as well as adapt the machines to local operating conditions.

In the future, the possibility of localizing production with the involvement of Ethiopian suppliers of auto components is being considered. This will not only increase the level of integration with the country's economy, but also reduce the cost price. Transport for the local market.

UAZ Patriot and its commercial versions, such as Pickup and Profi, are designed for off-road use and heavy loads.

The UAZ Hunter, a direct successor to the Soviet SUVs, retains the traditional layout and simplicity of the design. This makes it attractive for use in remote regions with limited access to service centers - just right for Africa.

Ethiopia was not chosen by chance: the country demonstrates one of the highest rates of economic growth on the African continent and is actively developing its industrial sector.

In addition, the country's government is pursuing a policy of import substitution, stimulating local production of cars. Russian automakers, including UAZ, see good prospects for long-term cooperation in this.
