Controversial Alfa Romeo Giulia ErreErre Fuoriserie restomod

At some point in history, automakers realized the power of live advertising through sports competitions. That's why many of them created a special division that deals with preparing vehicles for various types of racing.

Alfa Romeo is just that for the FCA group. Created by Italian coachbuilders cars are distinguished by their original design, powerful engines and reliable chassis. Therefore, the manufacturer always has something to be proud of.

The company appeared back in 1910, when its name had only the first part. But ten years later it became known to the whole world under the name that is still familiar to each of us today. Since 1986, the brand has been part of the Fiat Group, and four years ago – of the Stellantis Group.

Retro fashion is still going strong

The retro wave that appeared some time ago has not lost its popularity today. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see how restomods are complemented by body kits for new cars. And one of the first violins in this process is certainly played by the Italians and the French.

The latter, under the banner of Carrosserie Caselani, have established the production of body kits for the legendary SpaceTourer and Jumpy. The use of simple modifications can bring modern designs closer to the style of the classic Type H vans of the late 40s.

Some other manufacturers are moving in this direction. Let's remember at least the retro kit for Toyota RAV4, made by Mitsuoka. Its installation greatly transformed the original car, making it as similar as possible to the iconic American SUVs from the 80s.

But the leaders in this process are still on the Apennine Peninsula. After all, the Italian school of design is popular to this day. It was local specialists who elevated the discipline of body building to the rank of art. What are the names that are always on everyone's lips worth:

✅ Bertone
✅ Pininfarina
✅ Giugiaro
✅ Gandini
✅ Spada
✅ Sacco

They will remain among the absolute superstars of the automotive world for a long time. But, at the same time, not everyone who starts their project in Italy can automatically compare with the talent of Giugiaro and his ilk. Yes, being Italian is clearly not enough to be accompanied by 100% success.

Turin tuning studio ErreErre Fuoriserie demonstrates this in practice well. At the Geneva Motor Show, they presented their vision of the Alfa Romeo Giulia.

Looking at it, older people immediately recalled the absurd constructions of the past from Eastern Europe, presented several decades ago as part of the same event. One journalist even noted that "the monster, created on the basis of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, is also driving around other car dealerships, shocking the public quite well." Let's figure out together what the reason for such unexpected reviews is.

Remade with dubious success

The pale blue Alfa Romeo Giulia ErreErre Fuoriserie seems to be losing out to the original in terms of lightness, elegance and charm. The naturalness inherent in most cars of the Arese brand has also been lost. It is as if the flexible Italian suddenly turned into a “fat Bertha”. This is the impression that arises when you see the excessive folds and bells and whistles, which give the car a certain cartoonishness.

So while ErreErre Fuoriserie's creation references the beautiful and famous Alfa Romeos of the past, the result is akin to the work of a cartoonist. The creators call the disguised Giulia "a granddaughter dressed in her grandmother's clothes."

It is hard to deny the close attention to detail of the ErreErre Fuoriserie company. After all, they spent 5000 hours creating the new design of the car. The authors describe the result in the following words:

The end result is a kind of work of art on wheels. It perfectly reflects the Italian way of life, evoking only positive emotions.

There were also those who disagreed with such an enthusiastic review, believing that it turned out not quite as the authors and future fans initially imagined. Let us recall that ErreErre includes the following series of names of the studio's main people:

✅ the head of the company Gianluca Rubatto
✅ designer Fabrizio Rossini
✅ a carefully selected team of like-minded people

They worked hard to create something unique in its kind in the entire automotive environment. Engineers and designers who are passionate about technology eventually turned their passion into the final result. So that the dream became a reality.

Once per time you do not have to

The last time the body shop presented a remake of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio (officially the modern version of the Alfa Romeo 105 series), things were very different. The designers made a special effort to get as close as possible to the original from Bertone, which is already in its seventh decade. And it turned out pretty good:

✅ Front grille with integrated wedge
✅ a pair of round headlights
✅ a pair of air intakes at the bottom of the bumper
✅ extended wing edges
✅ tiny taillights

Adding carbon fiber accessories and a carbon fiber body, the Giulia Quadrifoglio has lost about 200 kg. All in all, it turned out pretty good, which inspired the Turin-based coachbuilder to present the world with another of its creations. And this one has more in common with Japanese watercraft than with fine Italian automotive art.

But many experts consider the representatives of the Alfa Romeo brand to be among the most beautiful in the world. Even the brand's modern models have not lost their appeal, although they lack the elegance of their predecessors (especially those from the 60s).

ErreErre Fuoriserie presented their vision, referring to the historical models of Turin. And this time, everything turned out to be far from as balanced as during the last project. It seems that the latest creation of the masters does not meet the basic aesthetic standards:

✅ flattened back sides
✅ ugly lanterns
✅ fish-style design similar to Mitsuoka models

As is known, this Japanese manufacturer is very much drawn to the appearance of the car, reminiscent of various inhabitants of the water element. For the iconic and refined Italian model, this was an unexpected decision, which can hardly be called successful.

More than three dozen are planned

And the new body parts are not made of cheap fiberglass, but of a light and durable carbon complex, which cost a pretty penny. In addition to aesthetic additions, the improvements also affected the mechanical side of the design:

✅ the standard six-cylinder 2,9-liter engine is retained
✅ its power has been increased from 510 to 562 hp
✅ new exhaust system Capristo
✅ adjustable Bilstein suspension

The eight-speed automatic ZF gearbox transmits torque of 680 Nm to the Pirelli P Zero Corsa Asimmetrico 2 tires on the rear wheels. Their size is 245/35 at the front and 285/30 at the rear. They are mounted on 19-inch wheels of their own design, referring to the original Alfa Romeo Giulia. The reduction in the overall weight of the car has had a beneficial effect on its dynamics.

Despite the substantial criticism, the company has plans to convert 33 original cars. Each of them can take about six months to complete, after the donor model is delivered. Given the painstaking work and long lead time, the upcoming creation of any restomod will be quite expensive. It can be almost 400 thousand euros.
