Gazelle and Sobol are now sold with improved engines

The GAZ plant decided to please fans of light commercial vehicles cars. The sales of Sobols and Gazelles with updated Euro-5 class engines have recently started. These are diesel power units that are manufactured at the Gorky Automobile Plant.

Not all cars of the Russian manufacturer will get the new engines. They will be equipped with NN series models, as well as buses "Gazelle" Next and City.

Let us recall that the Gorky Automobile Plant abandoned the more modern Euro-5 engines in 2022. This did not happen by their own will - the Cummins corporation supported anti-Russian sanctions, so the supply of diesel engines ceased.

In order to keep production going in our country, the government revised the requirements for vehicle certification in the Russian Federation. After that, manufacturers were allowed to produce cars that meet lower environmental standards.

But GAZ management had its own plan – to introduce engines of its own design. And they succeeded – production of G-series engines was launched.

The G51 power unit is considered Russian, but its production was not without the Chinese. If you look into it, it is a Cummins engine localized in our country.

The G51 engines have a volume of 2,5 liters and 150 hp. These are turbodiesels with Common Rail injection. By the way, they could have gotten more power from it, but they settled on 150 "horses". This had a positive effect on the resource.

The Gorky Automobile Plant produces different G-series engines. For example, the Sobol NN and Gazelle NN are equipped with power units with the G51C index. They have a torque of 420 Nm. These engines work in tandem with a new six-speed gearbox.

"Gazelles" of the Next and City series are now equipped with G51A engines. With the same volume and power, 2,5 liters and 150 hp, they have a torque of 330 Nm. This is enough for buses. After all, they are usually not overloaded, and you still can't fit more passengers in the cabin than necessary.

But the maximum speed of the equipment with the G51A engine is higher. And this is despite the fact that the manual gearbox with this engine is only five-speed.

All new engines comply with the Euro 5 class. But the most interesting thing about them is not this, but the presence of the EGR system. This means that the turbodiesel does not need AdBlue solution for proper operation, and this reduces operating costs.
Do you think the new G51 engines are promising?
