Sanmar Shipyard to Build Electric Tug for Green Marine Logistics

Sanmar Shipyard has signed a contract with Svitzer to build a new fully electric tugboat powered by batteries on board. The vessel will be 25 metres long and will have a bollard pull of 70 tonnes.

The ship's modern exterior was developed by Canadian designers from the Robert Allan Ltd. bureau. The project is scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2025, so there's not much time left to wait.

The tug will receive a battery with a capacity of 1818 kW*h. Two diesel generators are provided for backup power. They can also be forcibly connected to extinguish fires, as well as to increase the cruising range. This solution ensures high environmental friendliness and reliability of the vessel.

The Danish company Svitzer already has a fleet of more than 450 vessels and provides tugboat services in 140 ports and cargo terminals located in 37 countries around the world. The new tugboat will operate in a strategically important region – the Oresund Strait, located between Denmark and Sweden.

The choice of this location is related to the growing demand for environmentally friendly maritime transport in Scandinavia, where Svitzer is actively developing its business.

Sanmar Shipyard has previously proven itself as a reliable partner in the construction of high-tech vessels. The company has delivered several similar electric tugs that are currently in use in waters near Turkey.

For example, in 2024, a contract was signed for the production of the world's first tugboat with a combined power system, including batteries and methanol. The ship, 35 meters long and with a bollard pull of 85 tons, will be put into operation in the port of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Svitzer's CEO noted that the new tug design is in line with the company's goals to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 and meets customer demands for environmentally friendly solutions.

This deal confirms the commitment of both companies to strengthen their positions in the field of environmentally friendly maritime logistics. The new tug will be another step towards sustainable development of transportation both in the above-mentioned region and globally on a planetary scale.
