The PD-14 engine received a unique reverser design detail

Russian engineers have developed an innovative technology for creating composite grids. Now they are produced using a cellular monolithic method and are mounted in the PD-14 thrust reverser system.

The authors of the new approach were specialists from the Central Scientific Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering. The technology for forming an equal-strength structure is distinguished by exceptional structural stability.

It ensures reliable operation of the engine complex even if its individual elements are damaged. The PD-14 reversing device, in turn, was designed by engineers at UEC-Aviadvigatel, and production was established at the production facilities of the Perm plant Mashinostroitel.

The design is 59% polymer composite materials. This approach allowed to significantly reduce the weight of the unit without loss of strength. It is noteworthy that the carbon reverser grid is used for the first time in domestic aircraft manufacturing.

Another innovative solution in the PD-14 design was the use of an electric drive. According to Russian engineers, the system surpasses modifications with a hydraulic circuit in all respects. Moreover, in the world aircraft industry, there is also a tendency to switch to electric analogues.

The use of composite materials in the design allowed not only to reduce the weight of the unit, but also had a positive effect on the aerodynamic characteristics. During the design, the engineers of the Central Research Institute of SM used a number of innovative solutions:

✅ complex profiled shape of blades
✅ original layout of reverse jets
✅ use of longitudinal ribs

The latter protect the engine from the effects of reverse air flows. Let us recall that the development of the PD-14 engine reversing device began in 2018.

The unit has been certified and is in the first stage of serial production. The power plant will debut on the MS-21 airliner with the index 310.

The first prototypes are ready at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant Aircraft, awaiting additional equipment. The winged machines are already equipped with avionics, support systems and glazing. All components were developed in Russia.

Unfortunately, the UAC representative office has not yet announced the exact dates for the release of the first serial batch. It was previously reported that mass production would take place by the end of 2024, but later the dates were “shifted” to September 2025.
