BYD Launches World's Greenest and Largest Car Carrier

Chinese company BYD has taken a significant step towards global expansion by launching the world's largest car carrier with a capacity of up to 9200 cars.

The vessel, named Shenzhen after the company's home city, has successfully docked at the port of Yangzhou, near Shanghai.

The ship is impressive in size: 219 meters long, 37,7 meters wide, and has a draft of 9 meters. BYD Shenzhen can reach speeds of up to 18,5 knots (about 34,3 km/h).

The vessel belongs to the RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) category, which means that cars can enter and exit through built-in ramps. Thanks to them, it is possible to abandon the use of external loading mechanisms, which speeds up loading and unloading.

In addition, BYD Shenzhen has been declared the most environmentally friendly car carrier in the world. This was made possible by the use of dual-fuel technology, which allows the vessel to run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel.

The ship is equipped with innovative energy-saving devices and BYD Box stationary batteries. They are capable of powering the ship in port or in areas with strict emission restrictions.

Shenzhen is the fourth ship in the company's ambitious program to build its own fleet of car carriers. The manufacturer plans to increase their number to eight by early 2026.

In 2024 alone, BYD will deliver more than 417000 electric vehicles to export markets, a 71,9% increase over 2023. This was largely made possible by ships like these.

BYD's first car carrier, named Explorer, entered service in January 2024, followed by Changzhou, launched in December of the same year. That vessel has already set sail for Europe, carrying 5000 electric vehiclesLast week, the company unveiled another ship, called Hefei, which can carry 7000 vehicles.

The launch of the world's largest car carrier BYD Shenzhen with a focus on eco-friendliness underlines the company's ambitions not only as a leader in electric vehicles, but also as an innovator in logistics and shipping. It is possible that other Chinese and other brands will follow the company's example, which will play a significant role in the future of the auto industry.
